How Often Should Prince Release Albums?

Do you think that Prince putting out an album each year, and being so prolific, causes him to put out work less than he is capable of?

If he took years at a time, to put out each album, do you think they would be absolutely outstanding?

Do you think this has anything to do with the quality that is released?

Batdance

5 years is too much time between albums. With a 5-year gap, every album would be called a "comeback" attempt.

I think an album every other year would be okay.

He's still gonna write songs most every day of his life. If he put out an album every five years, we'd only hear what he (or whatever record exec) thought were the "best" songs from the WHOLE entire bunch, and we'd lose out on a lot of other good stuff (probably many songs that we'd feel were much better), so I'd rather hear as much as I can and decide for myself, even burning my OWN "best of" compilations just like most of us have already been doing in the last several years. Prince has put out A LOT of good music in just the last two years, and I'd hate to think what we would've missed if he hadn't have put it out for us to hear.

Five years is a long time, especially for someone with so much material. I think if he released something every 2 years, and got a good producer, his work might be more commercially successful.

TRON

One official release/year.

As many club cd's as he wants/year.

Sounds like a winning solution to the needs of his fans, the general public and himself.

1. During at least one stretch of his career, yes.

2. It depends on what exact span of time you mean when you say years at a time. Prince is the type that doesn't need 3-5 years to come up with new quality work. But there was a time when I thought he should have waited longer to develop more focused ideas within his work, instead of just trying to throw everything out there on the market. He has said that he wants a large body of work, and that's fine. But I don't think it should be at the expense of quantity over quality. Even if/when he slows down, I don't think he'll need more than 2 years to come up with quality material (though I don't mean that he should ALWAYS take that long between each album release). Spoiled Prince fans gasp at a 2 year span between albums because they're not used to it, and ... spoiled. But if you look back over your life, you'll find that 2 years goes by SO fast, it's just not funny. If it's quality material it will go by faster.

3. I think it used to be just ONE aspect of the quality of his work back during the late 80s on thru much of the 90s. I'm not convinced it was the only reason for his creative downfall. But lately things have changed for the better in that area for him. I have my theories as to why, but that's neither here nor there. A quality album every other year would be ideal. To expect a great album every year for the rest of his career is asking too much. Emphasis on the word "great."
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I think he should put out as much as he puts out.

Not every tune is going to be pop, but if it comes natural, then it's worth hearing.

The time lapse between 1999 and Purple Rain, Rave Un2.. and the Rainbow Children is the only evidence I have that Prince needs to take his time between retail releases. He should put out all of the music he wants through NPGMC but with retail he should definitely take his time...at least 2 years between releases.

the question should be HOW OFTEN SHOULD PRINCE RELEASE ALBUMS... THAT DON'T SUCK?

I liked the album a month deal on NPGMC but have more downloads. Strong singles are what I want. His albums have sucked for years.

As often as he likes. The more the merrier. You can never have enough Prince.

He should release a new album when he has finished it!!!
If that means every 2 months... lol
If that means every year it will be fine to.

But, in that case we won't have to worry about shelved albums like TheDreamFactory or Camille.

I cant believe this is even a question. Prince should release albums as frequently as he wants to. That was what the whole WB thing was about! jeez! PRince is the most prolific artist on the planet. He is happiest when he is free. We all know this. Changing the timing of a release or working on it longer is not going to affect the music. Prince doesnt release anything unless he knows it is the best that he can do with that particular peice at that particular time. We have all endured and adored his perfectionism throught his career. Even from the first album on which he insisted on producing himself.
...cause FACE said so!!!

Actually, that's not a bad plan at all...I like it! Then people wouldn't have to ask around for "outtakes" and other material that hasn't been officially released. It's fair to all involved: he gets the music out and makes money!! We hear coveted "boots" and can remain "faithful". FREE THE MUSIC!! woot!

Right on! If he would release some 'board
material then there's NO need to scramble for the best quality from the boots.
