I think Prince is a major contributor to many genres. He has written many songs categorized as pop, soul, funk, rock, ballads, and jazz. dig it.

He's not one of those either. Prince is a musical genius. Prince is probably the most prolific artist of his generation. And one of the things that makes him somewhat unique is his ability to take any particular genre of music that he's interested in, and give it his own unique flavor. Imagine if you will (a picture. just kidding) that Prince were a chef. And his style of cooking borrowed from different styles of cooking. Some French cuisine, maybe some good ole American cajun, you get my point. So the fact that he has knowledge of these styles of cooking and can create delicious dishes that contain elements of those particular styles would be his signature and his mark on the world. But would it make him a "French cook"? A master of "cajun cuisine"? No. Does that make any more sense? [Edited 5/22/10 9:46am] http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

I think P's a master at cobbling together elements that work really well together under his own style.
I don't think he's a major contributor to rock, say in a Hendrix or even Dylan kind of way, but he's a killer rock performer. The same goes for funk. I think he's incredibly funky (his rhythm clock is absolutely sick) but devoted fans of funk will shout you down with Cameo, the Meters and Sly and a host of other acts. Prince raps, but he's not a major contributor to the genre. He uses classical, but he's no Mahler or Chopin.

I brought this up awhile ago and the debate lasted WEEKS. Could you please explain 2 me what is funk and who are the funk artist u give credit 2. 4 me funk went in a new direction & that originated from Prince. Yes George Clinton, James Brown, Sly Stone, Cameo etc music depended on the funk but like Miles Davis, Prince had a fusion of sounds mixed in his funk and I feel the funk whether he is in the studio or on stage.

Funk is not always about music. It's the same thing with punk, it's all about the attitude. Prince was in fact a musician with a punk attitude in the early days, just check out Dirty Mind and Controversy eras for instance. He was at one point opening for Rolling Stones too and he got to visit UK, obviously that was to have a major impact on his later life.
Prince has always been funky of course, but not always in funk music in itself. Of course, then in the 90's he does something like Sexy MF and Days of Wild. Now, that's funk all over.

ButterscotchPimp, I think I get where you are coming from but it might be helpful if you clarified one thing. In the post JB, Sly, George Clinton era (basically the '80s) are there any "funk" artists that you think did more for the music than Prince? I ask only to try to get a handle on your definition of "funk." Who would you cite as some of the top funkateers of the '80s?

I totally agree with your stand point and you are totally right that Prince is not a funk artist but I don't belive you have to be a funk artist to contribute to funk. I wasn't under the impression this thread wasn't about wether Prince was a funk master or not it's wether he contributed. If this were a thread asking wether he was a Funk Master or pure funk artist I would be totally on your side But... It's about wether he contributed to funk I think even though Prince is not a FUNK MASTER he still contributed to the evolution of funk, He took it somewhere else. I think Prince's understanding of funk is much deeper than mear elemental sprinkling and ingredient. His Bass and Rythm guitar work are his most consistantly funky elements.

FUNK is not just a musical style which in the dictionary is defined as a combo of blues and gospel..
it's about the squeeze, he definitely contributed a lot via production, sounds, rhythmic tapestries and lyrical content. it's about the entire feel of a song and the squeeze it gives you. listen to the vocal on erotic city this too shall pass

His "funk" output is limited but his influence cant be overlooked. You seem to be another one of those guys who is against anything with drum machines and synthesizers. You are biased towards a certain sound and its really sad to see you in here discrediting certain artists/songs because they dont meet your criteria. Erotic City isnt anywhere near funky? what would you consider it then? you are a joke. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

Who me? Or the OP? Because none of those songs are remotely in the neighborhood of funk, so your point would be..... ... I'm with BP on this topic, fam. P is "not" a Funk Artist. He's a contributor. If that's the case 95% of his output would be funk and it's not. Mr. James Brown, if I'm not mistaken was a Funk Artist. He was a co-creator of it. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

SOME OF U DON'T KNOW OR UNDERSTYAND THE FUNK - PRINCE IS FUNKY WHEN HE WANTS 2 B
Funk comes in many forms not just james brown. It's about the tight band which prince has always had. check out NPG live with sonny t michael band etc. Prince has had some of the tightest bands and if the critics of prince don't find prince funky maybe u don't understand the funk. Miles Davis & George Clinton called prince funky so r ur opinnions truth or is it Your opinions are probably just personal criticism. Those who can't dance 2 kiss probably have 2 left feet. I could go down with my dance moves which impresses the ladies. Kiss is sex funk! kiss would have me on the dance floor then most of the songs I would hear in a club. peolple tend 2 dance 2 different music like I said b4 it's all about the feel. He makes Prince music. Some of it is funky, but he's not a funk artist. But he is one of the few doing funk these days. With few to compare to, he does seem at times like one of the major funk artists. Who else is there (at his level of popularity)? I see why people get all up in arms when you say he's not--he is funky afterall. But to me he's a pop artist, a guy who created a new style for himself that includes elements of funk, rock, jazz, pop, soul, new wave... To use your cooking analogy, he's like the California Cuisine of music. My Legacy
