Why the FUCK is there no PDF version of "The Vault"?

I mean, seriously? There's gotta be a file of this thing somewhere? It's not like they are selling hard copies anymore. Anyone got a clue about this?

Excellent question. I have been searching for copies of The Vault and Turn It Up 2.0 for years now, and I'd rather not have to pay through the nose to get them! PDFs need to be made, if they're not already out there.

Per Nilsen's feeling is that it wouldn't be fair on the people who've spent a great deal of money on The Vault for their to be an easily copied PDF doing the rounds.

This is the internet. When did feelings ever come into it?

Those that are interested enough, bought it. If somebody can be arsed or has that much spare time, go for it.

If I had it, I would scan it for ppl who can't get it. nod It's OOP, so why not share it as a PDF? The best thing to do, though, would be to put it back in print, along with Turn it Up 2.0 and DMSR: The First Decade. thumbs up!

Wrong. Back when it was first published, I wanted to buy a copy, but couldn't afford it. Now, I can afford to pay the original price, but not the current rate for used copies.

The demand for reprints of both Uptown books is out there, but evidently there's a reason why revised/updated editions haven't yet surfaced (I'm guessing it's $...didn't Uptown go broke, or something?).

You know what, I have a scanner right here. I would be up for this project. I'm in Oakland California if there are any takers.

However, I assume the book itself was made on computers, so there should be a file of the book floating around, right?

Yeah, make another pressing! That excuse doesn't fly. Also some of us are disabled and can't read hardcopy books without much f'nagling.

This thing really needs an electronic version.

Per himself has said recently that Uptown is shut down and there will be no updated edition. He's moved on. He has a job now and has left the Prince research behind. But he did mention he'd be interested in passing on his research to soemone else, if they were interested.

I just e-mailed Per and humbly volunteered to update the 3 books. I am dead serious about it, too. I realize there are hundreds of folks out there who are more qualified to do it than me, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. wink

biggrin I didn't realise such a book existed but that is excellent for another detailist like me? I seem to remember when i was in the oxford street branch of virgin megastore's music book department and browsed a book of all prince's lyrics up to that point (possibly early to mid 90's?) I forget the author but it had all released songs, the bootlegs (well known unreleased tracks?) and vault tracks in it and was pretty comprehensive if anyone can point me towards any information regarding that particular book? confused

That sounds like "Prince: A Documentary", by, yup, Per Nilsen and Uptown. It was a chronological 'diary' of Prince's career, and it had listings, discography and bootleg info at the back. Basically, this is what all the other Uptown books were built upon, ending with 'The Vault'.

biggrin It was a smaller book than the "A documentary by per nilsen" and might have been unofficial but basically just had his lyrics and maybe not hardly if any pics of Prince? confused

is he aware of options like this http://www.lulu.com/ http://www.bookprinting.org.uk/ http://www.fast-print.net/

those are just some i googled up

i saw something on tv about this where writers can directly sell books online that are either sold as a pdf file or printed on demand as a real book, with no minimum copies. presumably they host a pdf file and when a customer buys the book the company prints a copy automatically and binds it and ships it

there are also options where you can get small runs made, for example 50 copies for £170

so whilst i can understand him not wanting a pdf file that anyone can easily copy and share, he could make the book available in print form via those means, with little to no effort required. fans get a copy of the book, and he gets paid for it. it opens up no further ease of piracy, as it's just as easy for someone to scan and pdf an existing copy, than someone would do from one of these reprints

with those sites you can basically take any pdf file and make a bound and printed book, with different sizes and options such as paperback and hard copy
