Songs you think Prince should have released as singles?

Which of the other songs on Prince's albums that weren't put out on the radio do you think would have made good singles? I think there are many good choices but I'm curious to hear what y'all think smile

Electric Chair was a single, with "The Future" as the flip side.. It was really a double A-side type release.

"The Question of U" had an official video release, and it's even on the GB DVD.

I think "When 2 R In Love" had a video, albeit just a black screen with subtitles.

"Love" was re-released as the "Jam of the Day" on 3121.com, and was an acoustic version.

cool cool I wish that Prince would have released a long version of "Forever In My Life". At the end of the album version he just began to break down into what sounded like a fantastic instrumental riff and then it fades out. He should have kept that going for a few minutes.

"Lady Cab Driver" instead of "Little Red Corvette". It was all over the radio and everyone was loving it. "Little Red Corvette" was one of the few songs from the album that the radio wasn't playing and they didn't start playing it until it was released as a single.

Then the radio was clueless eek

But yeah, LCD should have been released as a single edit...I'm sure it would have been a Nº1 (R&B) and a Top20 (Pop)

WHERE? They were playing it all over Oklahoma. My aunt had a Red Corvette when that song was out and we'd blast it every time it came on the radio, which was often.

Radio will always be radio, and won't play something just because - not until a single is pushed to them. That's why radio went bonkers when ATWIAD showed up w/ no details. They're too "by the book" to figure anything out for themselves.

I also remember hearing "Delirious" a lot on the radio though, and that was never a single.

Jackson, Mississippi. Before "Little Red Corvette", with the exception of "I Wanna Be Your Lover" during the disco era, the only stations that played Prince period were the R&B stations. During the "1999" era, all the R&B stations were playing the hell out of "1999", "DMSR", "Lady Cab Driver", "Automatic", "Free", and "International Lover" before the second single was even released from the album. We used to wonder what the next single was going to be and debate over it since the radio was playing so many songs from the album. Everyone thought it was going to be either "Lady Cab Driver" or "DMSR".

All of a sudden one day, out of the blue, I heard a long extended version of "Little Red Corvette" on R&B radio which let me know it was the next single. Then, pop radio started playing the album version of "Little Red Corvette". I loved the 12 Inch version but the song itself was the last one on the album I expected to see as a single because I considered the original version as the weakest track on the album (not funky enough lol ). I think that's why R&B radio didn't pick up on it also until it was a single. The single choice was definately a crossover attempt (which was the last thing I wanted to see Prince do). Once a funk or R&B artist gets a pop audience, they are never the same. lol

"Private Joy"---the best song on 'Controversy'.I predict that,if this had been released as a single,it would have been Prince's breakthrough "crossover" pop hit.

"Automatic"---I know he made a video for it,but it really deserved to be a proper single.Woulda been a cool fourth single, instead of "Let's Pretend We're Married"

"And God Created Woman"

"Lovesexy"---a much stronger choice than the bland "Glam Slam".

It would have done extremely well on the R&B charts, but for some reason,I don't think that pop radio would have embraced this song.

Nah,I think it was a wise move to release "Little Red Corvette" as a single. That became Prince's breakthrough pop/crossover hit.I love "Lady Cab Driver" but I'm not sure if it would have had the same type of success.

The cool thing about '1999' is....like 'Thriller',the majority of it got played on the radio anyway. In my area, our R&B station put these songs in heavy rotation:

"1999"
"Little Red Corvette"
"Delirious"
"DMSR"
"Automatic"
"Lady Cab Driver"
"International Lover"

"DMSR",in particular, was played so much that many people assumed that it was a single.

"So Far, So Pleased" woulda been a HUGE hit: the fact that it sounds like a Corrs hit PLUS a duet with Gwen Stefani.

It would have been a top 20 R&B hit like "Controversy" and "Let's Work" was. wink
