Of course, how could LF/MPLS not be a commercial flop when you can only buy the album at Target in the States and only months later saw an European release in France?

If you WANT people to buy something, make it EASY for them to buy it.

If we add to that the fact that it was far from being amongst his best works you get the picture.

I thought that a TRC/NOA fan could appreciate LF/MPLS...

I mean, is waaaaay less poppy than 3121/PE...

sort of. Prince has a lot of fans. If they all buy the album the first week it can go #1 in this depressed music market

It would have been more impressive if it moved up the charts from word of mouth or from a hot single. That would say to me that he's popular again, but that hasn't happened for a long time
[Edited 5/19/10 15:35pm]

But I still think that 3121 was a nº1 for a reason! (the promo of Black Sweat maybe?) I mean, Musicology and PE were not Nº1 , and of course LF/MPLS has been a flop, sort of, in terms of sales...

his performance on SNL had some hype around it definitely, plus he'd put himself back in the public eye since 2004, but the music itself didn't seem to be popular, more just the idea of liking Prince again.

Not in my case...

I would save from the fire 'Feel Good...' and '$' off LF and, if you threaten me with a sword, 'Here' off MPLS Sound.

The rest I can do without. Though I must admit 'Something U Already Know' could be a good track if sung by a real singer.

it may his most popular, but isn't his best. in fact, it's his weakest since the "comeback" I think.

I LOVE 3121, Black Sweat, Love, and The Word. But Lolita is crap. Incense & Candles is desperate pandering. Satisfied may be the most obvious, uninspired retread of his career, despite the tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Fury is incredibly weak and watered-down on the album. BL&B is decent and catchy, but goes on forever, never really getting anywhere. The Dance is way too overwrought while at the same time sounding phoned in. Not a huge fan of his Latin jazz meanderings either, which brings us to the latin funk of Get On The Boat which sounds good on paper but completely loses me about a minute in.

I think all of his other albums from Musicology on are much better (even PE) and overall, 3121 sounds WAY too slick to me. Even the songs I don't like would be better without all the slick overproduction that sucks the life & soul out of them.

I don't hate it. But it's the NPS/Rave of this decade.
[Edited 5/19/10 10:49am]

Not really buying this comment, kind of lacking in real detail to me, To me Fury is great track, so to Get on the Boat ... the album is very strong and much better than Musicology as an album...it flows, yes weak jams like I&C but that's Prince he's never been a strong "Album" kind of artist because he puts so many types of music styles in his Albums it's hard to get the right balance ...but i'm not gonna knock him for it as that what makes Prince - Prince no other artist can do this and be true to the music, it's always Prince's best take on that style of music.

3121 does work on a number of levels as an Album - hence i can see why it's sold so many copies.

His best "album" in the 00's is TRC without question cool

what don't you buy about it? it's a guitar rocker that's got its guitars buried under layers of synths.... shrug

I look at Musicology, 3121, and Planet Earth as an opus of sorts. Parts 1, 2, and 3. The reason I think they are linked is in their overall concepts (at least what I am seeing/hearing, anyway).

Musicology: the past... a study in musical history. Prince reminds us about music. He uses some old beats and baselines. Musicology vid is retro as well.

3121: the present. Lots of r'n'b showing the young ones how to do it. Any of those songs could have been a big hit for any of the young artists at the time.

Planet Earth: the future. Poses questions about planet earth. Reconciling past relationships. The marketing of the disc - the future of the music industry.

Looking at it in this way makes all 3 albums more intersting.

Positivity... highfive

I agree, and I see LF/MPLS as a synthesis of the M/3121/PE trilogy...

though I would say that all of his album from Musicology on are him perfecting what he was trying (and failing) to do with Rave. they're kind of the same thing as Rave, but the material is much, much stronger on all of them (aside from a few tracks here and there).

agree.... He sounds like he is in a whole different space on those discs. Even coming out of the PFUNK space and turning that into Boom "what if another universe complete with sun and moon"
