Appreciation for "Return of the Bumpsquad!" Although I'm sure this release has been discussed on this forum before, as someone who is hearing it for the first time I have to say--WOW! Great sound recording of Prince's Gold Experience tour. Crisp, clean, and clear! Great song selections--even if you don't like the "Prince is dead, long live the NPG!" diatribe on it! It is just a great collection all around IMO! I'm really enjoying listening to it for the second time--what about you who like it, too?
The set list is as follows: Disc 1 1. Endorphinemachine 2. The Jam 3. Shhh! 4. Days of Wild 5. Now 6. Funny Stuff 7. Most Beautiful Girl Disc 2 1. P Control 2. Letitgo 3. Pink Cashmere 4. (Lemme See That Body Get) Loose 5. Count The Days 6. Return of the Bumpsquad 7. Outro 8. P Control 9. Letitgo 10. Everyday People/I Wanna Take You Higher!

As far as the song.....FUCK YEAH. Sorry, I guess I should have specified more information. According to my internet sources--this is a soundboard recording from the Gold Tour which is considered the best live recording. I can speak for the excellent sound of it--you can't even hear the audience most of the time! This recording is from the Miami 7/6/95 leg of the tour--Disc 1 and 2: tracks 1-7. There is also a Paisley Park rehearsal from August 23, 1995--Disc 2: tracks 8 and 9. Finally, track 10 on disc 2 is from a live performance with Dr. Mambo's Combo at Bunker's Bar & Grill on June 12, 1995. This is a release from Moonraker in 1997. So far, in my limited experience, this is the best sounding live collection that I have heard of its kind! I highly recommend it to anyone!

Luv the last phrase from the band spokesperson after the Dr. Mambo's Combo/Prince jam of "Everyday People" on track 10 of Disc 2: "All naked, all night...C'mon back!"

As far as the song.....FUCK YEAH. Ernest, I knew you'd be all over this topic. Was listening to Exodus today and thinking of how you totally want to marry this song. Take it - like Clarence said:

This was the first Gold-era live bootleg I heard and it's still probably my favorite live boot. It's fucking brilliant. "Return of the Bump Squad" and "Now" sound so fucking amazing live.

I've got this on a boot called R U Experienced but it hasnt got tracks 8,9 and 10 on disc 2 which makes sense as they're from a different time and place. Its cool to hear rare performances of Count the Days and Bumpsquad. Bumpsquad has Morris throwing the samples in from the studio version and Count the Days has bits of live sax in. Another highlight is the live version of Pink Cashmere that was played on the Gold tour. Excellent quality [Edited 5/11/10 4:31am] [Edited 5/11/10 4:32am]

next days' show was great too. rare performances of stuff like "big fun"
and "p control". the only bad thing about those shows is that some of those jams weren't stretched out even longer. i just don't want those songs to stop. very exciting period in prince's carreer and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

As far as the song.....FUCK YEAH. Ernest, I knew you'd be all over this topic. Was listening to Exodus today and thinking of how you totally want to marry this song. You know it's funny because I never knew about the album until about 1999 or so. I was first on the internet sporadically in 1997, bu 1998 I started to lay into it. I found fan sites, and one was "The Bump Squad". I never got where they got that name from, or why it related to Prince. I remember SEEING the Exodus album in Minneapolis in 1997, but I didn't think it was Prince or anything. I finally heard it in 1999 or so, and went bonkers on it. Then the song itself had a live version released on NPGMC 2001. I just lost it at that point. In 2003, a friend from alt.music.prince had an extra copy and I bought it from them I believe (or they just gave it to me, I forget; same happened w/ a copy of The Black Album). I thought "Shit, how the hell have I missed this album this whole time?!?!" I missed out on a lot of Gold era stuff just because of living in Oklahoma, and not having access to a lot of things like others did. We had a great bootleg shop in our area in Tulsa actually, but I didn't know what was out or what was good to get. I remember seeing The Jewel Box, In Rock (bought that one) and other stuff, but I had no idea what it all was or why I should pay $70 for it. But yeah, Exodus is so fucking classic. I hate that he ignores a lot of that music in concert. People would truly go wild if he played "Get Wild" or "The Good Life" in concert.

Too bad you couldn't have lived here 93-95, since you love Gold and Exodus. I have never seen Prince so into a project (3 actually, Come, Gold, and Exodus). As we all know, shortly after an album is released, he seems to have little interest in it anymore. But with these 3 it would go on for 3 years. It was kind of odd knowing all these songs from live performances, and then to finally have the album released was backwards. Gold definitely did not live up to the live performances of these songs, and for Exodus I always preferred Prince's vocals over Sonny's. He played the hell out of these songs at Glam Slam and Paisley Park live shows during that time. I have to say that if I had to listen to another 10+ minute version of Get Wild or Race at the time...well nothing really. It was a good time to go to the bathroom! TRUE BLUE
