TV show... rehearsal... aftershow... This is confusing...

I've seen the Chaka songs jam with P & Stevie + 3121, it lasts 18mn, was Prince broadcast on more stuff or just that?

COMMENT

Released within a few weeks of the show taking place this is one of the few recent releases which will undoubtedly interest the majority of collectors and is something of a coup considering the circumstances in which it was recorded. With the exception of the 2006 Tamar recordings (which I have refused to add to the site), Prince's recent 3121 parties have been something of an enigma for the majority of people - thankfully no longer. The show can be separated in to two different segments with the content of Disc 1 consisting mainly of indulgence by Prince with a number of guest appearances. Disc 2 is a far more focused set with highlight after highlight and the undoubted crowd pleaser. The show begins with a lengthy 15 minute smooth instrumental which has a number of similarities to 'The Rainbow Children' (instrumental) and features various band solo's. Doug E Fresh is announced (was that a groan I heard from the crowd?) and raps through various numbers including a groove based loosely around 3121 and includes chants and lyrics from "La Di Da Di", 'Push It Up' and the 1997/8 aftershow favourite of "Who rocks the hardest? The Artist rocks the hardest" amongst others. He's brushed offstage to make way for Tamar who runs through a number of tracks from her upcoming album (with a shameless plug announcing the August 29th 2006 release date) and whilst I'm no fan of her style or her (lack of) stage presence, this is one of the better performances I've listened to. The show really steps up a gear with the funk of '3121' kicking in and whilst Doug E Fresh reappears, he's a bit-part player and can't dent what is an excellent performance of the track. The groove of 'Lolita' has the crowd matching Prince word-for-word and the song is similar to the American Idol performance, however this time including the call-and-response "How bad is that girl?" section which the crowd join in with Prince. 'Satisfied' gives way to an extraordinary live version of 'Black Sweat' complete with the high pitched synth line which wouldn't sound out of place on a 1970's Vincent Price movie - very camp, but perfect. The track is mainly instrumental and features some lengthy bass playing (presumably Prince) and it isn't until around 4 minutes into the track Prince begins the lyrics. 'Kiss' is similar in the respect that it is instrumental until around 4 minutes into the track. The arrangement is the closest live version to the original studio release than any since the 1987 Sign O' The Times tour - the horn section add a fullness to it (along with adding a snippet of 'One Nation Under A Groove'), however it is stripped down of much of the extra instrumentation which plagued the live version all these years and is all the better for it. A 16 minute 'Joy In Repetition' is proceeded by a lengthy horn-led intro lasting around 8 minutes and includes Tamar adding a portion of 'All I Want Is You'. This version sets up a guitar heavy climax to the show - 'Anotherloverholenyohead' is frantic and an extremely unique interpretation of the track which includes a manic 'Rock Lobster' outro leading in to 'Red-Headed Stepchild' to close the show with Prince informing the crowd "The police say we got to go - goodnight". The quality of the recording is surprisingly good and the closing 25 minutes are the only reason this doesn't make an EX grading. For the majority of the show it is superbly clear with the absolute minimum amount of crowd noise - something which is is doubly impressive considering the intimate setting of the venue. There is the occasional waver during both 'Black Sweat' and 'Kiss' but it is very minor and easily overlooked. The intro to 'Joy In Repetition' is slightly more hollow than the rest of the recording and this lasts for around 11 minutes before it returns to normal. The same thing happens again towards the end of the recording and whilst it is of minor consequence considering the overall excellence - it's certainly noticeable. Those observations aside, one cannot help but be impressed by the quality of this release and there is nothing on here which will get a single complaint from me - Mr. Fresh himself couldn't ruin this.

I remember Puffy/P Diddy/Diddy ... fuck it ... Sean Combs pulling his sons fingers out of his ears like he was saying "listen to history motherfucker, don't you dare block this out" and Kanye West with his digital camera, both standing in amazement.
