"I'm from Minneapolis...I don't play that" Ok I first heard this on the Lovesexy Concert during the intro of Love Bizarre.
He now comes out with the same line on ONA Live. So just what is he trying to say with this statement? He don't play what? Is he responding to his critics? if so who? What do you all think?? How can a non-musician discuss the future of music

I wouldn't read into it too much, he's just playing with the crowd. Nothing to do with playing white music(whatever that is) or black music, just posturing. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

I'd always assumed (probably incorrectly) that this comment was just a reaction to anybody in the audience making any request whatsoever! He doesn't play that game, he just performs what HE wants to play.

It is a popular expression among us black folks!!! like I am too cool!!! or I am the bomb!!!...Example someone would ask me to go to a Country Western bar and I would respond "What!!! a Country Western bar, please I don't play that!!!" "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud!!!" - Brother James Brown
"Make my funk the P-FUNK...I want my funk uncut...." Brother George Clinton

gman is close but it aint that deep. I don't play that does mean I'm bad. You can't play me. Homie don't play that, kinda thing. (nobody remembers Homie the Clown?) Gman and Nu got it right..I dont play that is expression for "dont give me any of that bullshit because I am not havin it..dont fuck with me". Something must have happened in the crowd to make him say that. "Climb in my fur."
