Adam Ant claims that Prince bought and danced to his records

Do you think he (Prince) was into the whole British new romanticism scean in the UK then? We know Prince has a love for British Music culture and Bands ?

Quote from Adam Ant:

AA: "Yeah, Prince, but then there was that article in Uncut about the whole scene he nicked that from, Parliament-Funkadelic. And I know for a fucking fact, 'cos Andre Cymone is Prince's half-brother and he produced Manners & Physique for me, that when 'Prince Charming' came out, Prince rushed out and bought it, and he was dancing around… and look at the costumes he wore after that!"

prince's look was very similar to adam ants, only later. it's quite possible. after all prince is inspired by a number of artists, and from the purple rain era alone you can clearly see the james brown, carlos santana, sly and the family stone, parliament/funkedelic, joni mitchell and fleedwood mac references

and if you listen to some of the rehearsals and soundchecks you hear parts of madness and talking heads, so he was well aware of the other artists around at the time, and if you listen to some of the covers he's been playing the past couple of years, like the cars and inxs, he's been pretty aware of the music of that period, so i wouldn't write it off completely

Yes , in GB I dont know what song he was performing , but the one he performed with a white line across his nose, reminded me alot of adam and the ant, their both talented (Prince more so!) so I don't think his comments are "diss". Yes , I think the whole new wave/British new romanticism sceen in the UK at that moment in time influenced his music direction as well as GOD since he always says that , I hope he gets influenced by the scene again as well as the new indie stuff over here again.

Adam Ant had a very strong visual and musical style.
He diectly influenced Prince in many ways. Not just the ruffled shirts and all, but even during the SOTT era with the color twist ties in the hair.

That was 100% Adam Ant.

i don't agree

being an ant fan, i know adams influences, and the makeup and hair were inspired by native american indians. potentially prince took his inspiration more directly

going back, adam's first main look was before the new romantics, his style was in between punk and new romantic. his influence to new romantic was mainly that you could dress how you liked

You have to give Adam his due. He made a big impression when he came out.
Prince was not the only one paying attention to him closely.

I think Prince took notice i.e. a man can be beautiful and femme but has been stated a multitude of times on this site is that prince tooke imagery from jimi h and the Who had the whole ruffle stuff going on so essentially it is musical heritage. Adam Ant would be too immediate (In my opinion) for Prince to register beyond the fact that europe liked fey and he liked that.

I just put Prince Charming in my disc changer the other day. It's been a favorite album of mine since it came out. I've always thought Prince was influenced by Adam Ant's style.

All the punks and new romantics helped to define the 80s look, Adam Ant is a sexy MF, love the "Jubilee" movie.

kings of the wild frontier is a great album too, in fact it's probably better than prince charming. i play both albums back to back on an irregular basis. there are special editions with demos and b sides etc, and there is a boxset of b sides and rarities. i've got a fair few bootlegs of live gigs too. the videos were also fantastic, and he had the boat on stage during the prince charming tour

kings of the wild frontier was probably the first album i got, ant music was one of the first singles

In his autobiography Adam mentions meeting Prince a couple of times... the second being when Adam was dating Vanity and Prince was a little pissed off about it. In fact, Prince wasn't the only one, according to Adam. He reckons Rick James approached Vanity, whilst she was on Adam's arm, and asked why on earth she would be settling for this white man when he had something wholly more impressive to ride... poor chap.

Anyway, back to the issue, there is more than a little chance that Prince would have listened to Adam and the Ants, if for nothing else than he is such a vain little man that an album title like 'Prince Charming' would have never passed him by.

Kings Of The Wild Frontier is fantastic. I've got the special editions of that, Prince Charming and Dirk Wears White Sox. Great stuff. The Ants were a big part of the soundtrack of my youth. I gotta hear some new wave now and again.

Dirk Wears White Sox is an awesome album. I must say, I also have a soft spot for some of Adam Ant's solo work... Manners and Physique is a good album, Wonderful, that came a few years later, is marvellous too!

adam released a biography about a couple of years ago and he was doing a book signing at watersons book store that was literally a minute walk from my office at lunchtime, but i didn't go as i was really busy that day (there's only a handful of days per year that i'm really busy). someone else said he went past and the line was right down the street. whilst he was popular in the uk in the 80s i didn't think he would have been so popular now, especially not after failed comebacks in the 90s

something that i wanted to do was give him a scrapbook i made when i was young that was filled with magazine and newspaper cut outs, including the adam ant cartoon strip from the look in comicbook at the time. it was an actual adam and the ants prince charming era scrapbook too, and it was choc full of stuff. i couldn't find it however, and coincidentally i came across it just a few weeks ago whilst i was getting new furniture and throwing stuff out. i didn't look at it as i was too occupied with clearing out crap, but i'll have to dig it out again as i've not looked through it since the early to mid 80s

i also came across my malcolm mclaren ticket from the talk he gave last year, where i met him in the bar afterwards. a fascinating 80 min or so talk about his life. it was a bit like the radio 2 documentary he did around 2006, but far more detailed, and he was literally 2 metres away whilst telling it. he really had one of the gentlest handshakes. even prince has a good grip on him, although he doesn't normally shake hands due to guys wanting to excert a powerful grip on him. i didn't know at the time he had cancer, so that may have been the reason. for all the power that emitted from malcolm, he was incredible gentle and meek when i met him, and he was the man that was responsible for me becoming a fan of my first popstar, and responsible for one of the bands that gave the music industry a well needed kick up the arse, not to mention bring hip hop to the uk

On his autobiography there's a chapter where Adam tells about Michael Jackson phoning him in the middle of the night. He thought it had to be a joke, so he hung up. Minutes later it was Quincy Jones calling, explaining MJ would like to speak with him. Apparently he was already an admirer already and wanted to know how he got the "burundi" sound down, as well as his jacket. They remained friends (even though MJ also took an idea or two out of Adam clothings), and seem to recall some pics from MJ house were he had an Adam Ant picture on display (!).

Adam's in a bit of a bad way right now so don't read too much into that statement the top of the thread (read the full interview for more information on his current state of mind)

He does mention in his autobiography (as said a few posts up) that Prince threw a bit of a hissy fit in a hotel when he caught Adam hanging around with Vanity. I believe he also states that he found Prince very arrogant but couldn't help but like him because he liked his music and videos so much.

Adam Ant was brilliant not forgetting Marco Pirroni who co-wrote all the songs.

I was obsessed with him as a kid. I remember he came to my mum's workplace they was working on the Prince Charming video, he came in to get some measurements and she got it his autograph for me i was so chuffed but wasnt allowed to meet him, a couple of years later i had to see him that i went to see at the BBC, he was so sweet had a chat with him and gave me a kiss on my lips and i nearly fainted lol I was only about 12 tho. I was so in awe of him back then, but then i discovered Prince.

It's odd how they do kinda have that similiar persona. But also at that time music was very influenced by the post punk and new romantics and UK was at top of the current music sceen and Adam Ant was at top of the game. Prince was still getting himself established so it doesnt surprise me they would look up to Adam for ideas etc, but even when u listen to the albums today its brilliantly done and original.

Adam Ant has got himself back on his feet. I saw him about 3 yrs ago and he did looked a bit rough but now hes got a lot better. He looked really well at the Malcolm Maclean funeral and he got stage at Gary Numan gig for doing a duo for Cars, and did his own gig last week looking good and sounding good(i will post the pics).
