Rick James went minneapolis sound after 1983, and that's when he started to lose his edge. I never understood what happened with this guy (drugs?): he was so talented at 1st and then his music went weaker and weaker. His last 80's albums sound more like sub-Jesse Johnson records than Rick James. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

^ the fuck? no minneapolis sound? prince stole everyones sound to sell records? lol! Anyways I dont think Ricks Mid-Late 80s production sounded much like Prince at all. Technology was at the forefront of popular music during that time period and to limit Ricks possible inspiration to one artist makes no sense. Prince did a complete 180 in 1985 and only dabbled in his former style from then on. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

I don't think that Rick was copying Prince, musically, but let's be honest....Rick's 1985 music video "Glow" looks alot like 'Purple Rain'.

I don't think Rick's music was very Prince-sounding at all.In 1983,he changed his sound, like so many other funk artists and bands....adding more synthesizers and less horns, but I don't think it sounds like the stuff that Prince was doing at the time. I never understood what happened with this guy (drugs?): he was so talented at 1st and then his music went weaker and weaker. I agree with this.'Cold Blooded' was Rick's last great album.'Glow' had a few really cool tracks, but it's no masterpiece.'The Flag' (1986) and 'Wonderful' (1988) are terrible. ... [Edited 5/14/10 6:21am]

[Edited 5/14/10 6:21am] Exactly. I've always said that Rick and Prince switched places around 1985. Prince took Rick's horns and Rick took Prince's synths. Hell, both of them should have just stuck to the style they were famous for. Andy is a four letter word.

I also think that The Flag had a few decent songs. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

Jesus. I bet Prince still has teeth marks from Rick biting him so hard. Listen, I've said it before: At one time, Prince and Rick may have been "competition" to each other at one time...fighting over some funk-rock turf. However, Prince surpassed Rick by 1982 if not 1980. Shit, I think The Time were more in line to compete with Rick James audience. By Little Red Corvette, Prince had transcended and crossed over leaving Rick in alone in his box. By 1984, Prince was in outer space and onto new galaxies. "New Power slide...."
