Joy In Repetition - Cd v Tape

Ok, I originally bought Graffiti Bridge on cassette tape many moons ago.

Joy In Repetition finished quite nicely at the end of side A, I'd flip it over and carry on playing side B (fastforwarding over Love Machine of course). When I eventually got the CD version I was peeved that it ran too fast into the aforementioned song. (Dunno if this is just on my version of the CD?).

Anyway, to this day it really peeves me off to hear that tiny little cut-off at the end of JIR and straight into Morris chuckling...anyone else the same?
..sharmone MF..!

Yes - although in my case it was the opposite. I got the CD first, and when I got the tape a while later, was delighted to hear those extra few seconds at the end of JYR!

seconds of silence? or is there something beyond where the CD version cuts off?

Seconds of the last sound fading IIRC and yeah, every CD copy's like this: Prince obviously felt it worked better thisway, and only left the fade on the cassette because it'd have been too abrupt for the song to end like on the CD if nothing came next.

I lost my tape copy of it years ago: i'd love to hear it again...

I also wonder if the vinyl is like the tape or like the CD (it would make more sense if it was like the tape)?

Won't anyone ever rip this version to MP3??? sad

The more criminal act is the missing of the orignal intro of Joy. 20 years on and I still cringe when I hear the bodge that Prince decided to release. The original intro was the most haunting and engaging intro he has ever made.

The funny thing is that on "Crystal Ball" (1986) it was already segued from "The Ball". I see some logic in fading a song into "Joy", it's an interesting start for it even though it means losing the intro.

I disagree. "The Ball" is the weakest link of the original "Crystal Ball" configuration and the awesome intro to JIY should not have been sacrified to intro it from a sub-par song.

What I wish is that he'd ditched "Beautiful Night" on SOTT, moved the title track back to side 4 along with JIY (in its original form) and opened the whole thing with "Rebirth Of The Flesh".

not that there's anything wrong with the album the way it is, but it works better that way for me.

I only like the pre sequed original recording.

I want to be buried with an unplayed CDR or the original Joy and Dance with the devil!

I miss those little organ notes too. And I can't say I've ever missed the intro. I thing the segue works perfectly to set up the story he tells later.

Its the drum machine before the keys that make it haunting!

I had that on cassette, and miss those ending notes.

What I don't get is why those notes aren't intact on the bootleg version???

I originally had Lovesexy on tape before I had it on CD.
No doubt due to a dubious cassette-player, my tape played slightly faster than the CD.
It was quite a disappointment when I got the CD and realised it..was...all....a.....bit.....s-l-o-w-e-r.....!

I had Graffiti Bridge on cassette WAY before I had it on CD, and I've never noticed the shorter ending on the disc. Then again, I've only listened to the disc maybe 2-3 times since I got it 4-5 years ago, whereas I listened to the cassette CONSTANTLY (back when I still owned a tape deck).

I love the transition to Morris laughing. I also really dig "Love Machine" so no problems here. Also never heard the cassette version so that might be worth checking out if cassettes still existed.

Wow, cool thread with some very significant albeit kind of obscure information about sequencing.
I had the cassette of GB, bought it for .25 sealed, but I sold it way back when. Never listened to it, but looking at the tracklist, I always wondered how it would be to hear JIR end cold without the laugh intro to Love Machine. Now I need to know.

Ditch "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night?" eek That's not really necessary. Each disc clocks in at just over forty minutes so Prince easily could have included at least another five minutes of music per disc.
