Is Your Favorite Album of All Time a Prince CD?

If you could only own 1 album would it be a Prince CD? Which one would it be?

I think "The Gold Experience" is probably my favorite and most listened-to album of all time.

Y'all?

I don't think there is one whole album that would be my favorite. I like different things from different albums.

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

Sign O The Times.

It's the most talented pop album ever made.

But, with that, i have to say that i can't necessarily single just one of my fave albums (a mixture of many artists), they're all just too special. Sign O The Times is probably ahead of them all though if we get technical and dig to the cores.

I don't have ONE favorite album, it'd be more 100 favorite albums, and Prince would probably get 40 or 50 of them...

The Gold Experience.

He created an own, new universe for himself with that album. Every single song is stellar on its own, the whole album has cohesion, the lyrics are thoughtful, yet cocky and bold, the arrangements and production are timeless, with loads of perfection and attention to detail, although the record still bristles with raw, honest, dirty energy. A masterpiece.

Some nice adjectives in there and I would agree that the gold era was the last time he seemed relevant, like some major work was about to burst out of him, but ultimately that never happened. A major artistic rebirth seemed possible, and I suppose, depending on your point of view, you could say such a thing did occur--only he came out a pious douche instead of a new version of the raw rebel rude boy.

And I find the record anything but raw or honest. The era sure was, the live shows sure were, but that record is so overproduced it sounds like Steven Sondheim taking a stab at a funk record. The title song is a painful and hyper-polished rewrite of Purple Rain, Dolphin has the sheen turned up to 11, Endorphinemachine got a nice overproduction from its earlier incarnation, etc, etc. And then there's the segues.
No hard feelings.

Cynical seems too strong a word. I'd suggest you go back and edit with 'playful'. In which case, yes.

I find the Gold Experience to be one of his middling albums, the npg operator interludes pointlessly interrupt the album and becomes irritating, and tracks like Billy Jack Bitch and the ones with rapping are a bit naff.

I am able to relate to what you are criticising about this album and I surely can imagine the production of most of the tracks on there can be perceived as cheesy; I think it's a rather personal connection I have to this album that makes it stand out so much for me. However, musically and song-wise speaking, I still think it contains his best work to date, next to some of his work on Parade, 1999, Purple Rain, Sign "O" The Times and Lovesexy. This albums still feels like every song can stand tall on its own and, most of all, he seemed to be very sure of what he was doing, which, in my opinion, usually brings the best out of him.

As to him having been a douche during that period - from what we've seen of him, I can imagine why people would say that. Still, as he is an artist and a persona and I do not have to interact with him personally, I found his eccentric behaviour during that time very interesting and amusing. I do love the Gold era.

Right on. And sentiment is hard to detach from our favorite musical pieces no matter how we try, isn't it?

But, I wasn't saying he was a douche (pious douche, I believe I so eloquently stated) during TGE, but rather after, meaning his conversion to the JWs.
No hard feelings.

Oh well. I have to admit the music did suffer from it, but my tender age makes it easier for me to interpret it my own way, so that I can appreciate it and enjoy albums such as Newpower Soul and Rave, even if I know that his music is not always above bar, to put it mildly. You know, it's the insecure youngling inside of me, who needs something to identify with!

I have at least 10 albums that routinely change spots as my top fave. Sign o the Times and Parade are definitely in the mix.
