Dirty Mind or Controversy? Which album do you prefer?
Now I like "controversy", but I love Dirty Mind! I think that this is one of his best albums it's vastly differrent from his first two efforts and wass vatly differnt than music was at the time it was releasedI personally think this is one of his early masterpieces. What do you guys think? ~KiKi

these are like the same album too me.Controversy has a better overall Funk Feel but I think "Dirty Mind" has better honesty.I think Prince tried too ride the Shock Value with "Controversy"&parts of the Album don't hold up as well as "Dirty Mind" did for me on a whole."Dirty Mind" too this day remains the Most Honest ALbum I think Prince has ever done from start too finish. mistermaxxx

I love both but I will choose Dirty Mind that album Rules. It's just so Different and Wild and Punk and Raw and just well in my opnion Prince. It is the Definitive Prince album besides Purple Rain and 1999. A fan must have.

What do you guys think? Although I think Controversy is essential, I co-sign you. Considering what his first two albums were like, Dirty Mind was totally out of left field, unpredictable, rawer, ballsier, more consistent, and is like a compact punk album by a brother from another planet. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Both albums are vintage Prince- Prince in his prime. They represent an artist emerging on the scene with some unbelievable notions and musical ideas. They are fraternal twins- both having 8 songs, both opening with a blistering title track, etc.
However, I give the edge to: Controversy. It's funkier, more fresh and more consistent in my opinion. Yes, it may not be as shocking as Dirty Mind, but nothing on that album compares to the opus that is the title track of the latter.

I love 'em both, but I'd go for Dirty Mind, as I think it flows thru superbly from start to finish and has a raw feel to it.
Whilst Controversy has some classics on it, I've always found it a tad disjointed. Little? Yeah, right. It might be little but it's loud

Controversy was the 1st. album I heard, but I like Dirty Mind a lot more. Prince is just so raw!

I would choose'Dirty Mind'.It's a stronger, more consistent collection of songs, imo. And it contains one song which can truly be called a Prince classic,"When You Were Mine".
'Controversy' is great but it has a few weaknesses ("Do me Baby" is too long and gets silly real quick..."Ronnie,Talk To Russia" is political filler...and the title track is too long and repetitive, although it's a great groove).

I think dirty mind is by far the best (head and when u were mine are enough on their own to beat the whole of controversy), but it really lacks a decent "do me baby"/"int'nal lover" style song. and while we're on the subject, sexuality is a really cool and under-rated song, and prince shows it with his reference on TRC. All those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand...

Dirty Mind all the way - There are no weak songs on it, unlike Controversy which has Annie Christian (one of his worst songs IMO).
In some ways the albums are similar (Partyup Vs Let's Work, Controversy Vs Head), but in Gotta Broken Heart Again, Dirty Mind has a truly tender song which I don't think Controversy has.

That's hard...
Controversy Do Me, Baby Private Joy Let's Work Dirty Mind Uptown Head I guess I'll say Controversy. Head & Uptown are fantastic but Let's Work makes me wanna slap people - THAT'S some good shit...

"Do Me,Baby" is very overrated, imo. The song starts off okay, but it soon becomes incredibly silly as it progresses ("Well, isn't it supposed to take a long time?").I know many of his female fans LOVE that whole faked orgasm ending, but I think it's unintentionally funny...lol...on the other hand,I absolutely LOVE "Gotta Broken Heart Again".It's short and to the point. I hear what you're saying about Do Me Baby - the older I get the funnier that ending sounds BUT the groove is tight as all hell. It's still a panty dropper & you know it! . I would have to say Controversy. It was just a better album to me. It was funky and you can see that Prince was starting to develop more as a song writer. I mean a year later we got the ultimate Prince album 1999.

Dirty Mind...Controversy was just that, too political.

With songs like "Sexuality", "Do Me Baby", "Private Joy", "Let's Work", and "Jack U Off" Controversy wins hands down.

Dirty Mind. Controversy is one of my least favourite albums of P's.

I'd say Dirty Mind edges Controversy just because more of the songs from it (When U Were Mine, Uptown, Head, Party Up) end up in my all time favorite Prince songs.
I never got how people thought Controversy was Dirty Mind p2 though... To me, it always fit in better with 1999; this is where he started with all of the synth-funk that came to fruition on 1999... Ahh, the Prince of the '80s I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Controversy a better overall funk feel then Dirty Mind? It's the lack of funk that bothers me about Controvery. DM had Head (can it get any funkier then that?), Uptown (dancable funk track slightly laced with light rock guitar), Party up and Do it all night (sort of R&B funk. Made from why you wanna treat me so bad?) The only thing on Controversy is the title track (some consider it new wave), the funk track watered down with dance pop, Let's work, and Sexuality despite the James brown Chicken scratch guitar is hardly funk. Controversy is only slightly funkier then the almost funkless Purple Rain. Now the other Prince album released that year called "the Time" featuring Morris Day and Jamie Starr(Prince) on lead vocals was funky as hell. I saw in a magazine article around 1985, that Prince was orginally going to make The Time his band and that he was going to be the lead singer under the name Jamie Starr and that whole cool and zoot suit image(From Kid Creol???) was already worked out and that's why Prince already had the album done when he gave it to Morris, before the time even had all of it's members. Has anyone else heard this before?

That's actually a tough question...
I would go for Dirty Mind, I guess. Though I don't really know why, just a feeling.
