Madonna & Prince "Love Song" UNDERRATED I remember when this song came out...
Early 1989... Right after the "Sign O' The Times" masterpiece and the "Lovesexy" album/tour, Madonna releases her fourth album "Like A Prayer" including this collabo from two of the 80s two biggest superstars out of nowhere... Perhaps critics and listeners expected some sort of "Like A Virgin" meets "When Doves Cry" type of accessible pophit, because I remember the overall reaction was major dissapointment... However I loved this odd song from the first time I heard it. Lovesexy-era type sound, minimalistic, weird funky and atmospheric... Let's all agree, some twenty years later, this song is definetly not as bad as the nay-sayers said it was back then... In my opinion, this is definetly an overlooked gem in the Prince catalogue. Appreciation for "Love Song", everybody! [Edited 4/10/10 21:02pm] [Edited 4/10/10 21:05pm]

unfortunately, this has always been a little underwhelming to me. it's my two favorite artists coming together. i guess i feel like it really ought to wow the shit out of me. it just kinda floats along not really going anywhere. it's good, it's very cool, but it's nothing near what you'd have expected from these two in 1989.

I was there in 1989, and this song deliver what Prince songs did in the 80s, an unexpected experience. Since the Purple Rain album everyone wonder when Prince will create his next "When Doves Cry" or his next "Let's Go crazy" but he did the opposite every time. "Love Song" is a perfect example of this, a time when Prince give us surprises challenging the taste of the audience, no obvious tunes. Love it! "I have so much love for Prince. But why don't they look at me that way"- MJ

Always dug this song. I also like the uncredited stuff P does on Like A Prayer. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Ehh I don't really care for it, to be honest. And I LOVE both Prince and Madonna. "I pride myself on working with great musicians, and I consider her to be as such. She's an amazing talent, the real deal." Prince on Beyoncé ♥

It's a pretty boring song for two such artists.

Totally agree...my two favourite artists together for a song? When I found out they were doing this for Like A Prayer I was so excited (though only 9 at the time, bless me!) ...but it was a bit of a non-event. Not bad, just not the epic I was hoping for www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

at the time i liked it, really because it sounded like a Prince track plus vocals by Madonna. Now i'm not really into it any more. There are much stronger tracks on the Like a Prayer album.

It's a really interesting duet and arrangement from 2 world-conquering artists at the height of their powers. I love it myself, I rate it among Madonna's best. For such an autocrat, Prince really knows how to blend with a singer. Arms of Orion is another example of this from the same era. Take it - like Clarence said:

thanx I couldn't read any sarcasm in you original message so... The poster means the Madonna song "Hung Up", which starts with a couple of lines from "Love Song"...."Time goes by so slowly for those who wait..." www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

I love this song. A video would have taken it over the top. Especially at that point in both of their careers. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I think it's a really beautiful song. I got into the rest of her album after I bought it just for this song. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

It's very special track...
I love a story about this song, they are so same persons hard-nosed Prince did on track Like a prayer, Keep It Together and Act Of Contrition too, Madonna said it for magazine Songtalk (1989) If U're lookin' 4 somebody, who'll turn your bad day into one long night of fun, look no further

Even if I'd love to bury Madonna -alive, of course- thousands of feet under the ground, I've always liked this song.
