I love his more evolved sound, but we're talking about different styles of guitar for different types of music. The jazzier, cleaner, more technically sound riffs we've been hearing lately are specifically tailored to the context in which they are used. If you listen to ONA Live and listen to "When U Were Mine," for example, that grittier, earthier sound is most certainly there. It's not that his style has changed, he's simply showing a different side of his guitar skills. The Mothership Connection... All I ever need to hear is his chicken scratch playing "Climb in my fur."

I prefer any Prince guitar style. There are many ways to just bring it regardless of style. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

The jazzy stuff was already there in the purple rain era I suppose. A love bizarre has a very jazzy solo. Also, Let's Go Crazy sounds pentatonic but actually that outro and some of the licks halfway through are very jazzy. Lots of chromatics and myxolydian... I think that side of his playing got lost a little later on. (On the lovesexy tour he played some very jazzy blues, but the blues jam on the Rave DVD is very pentatonic) But now he's rediscovered and extended it. And I like it a lot!

Definitely the old sound... It was simpel and it had that "chewie" and "screeching" sound... Then came 1994... New guitar... New hollow sound... And then over the years that came he practised more on his technique and tried to sound more like Santana... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O
