I dont think anyone came close to being Prince at all. However i went to see Trent D'arby on his "Hardline" tour, he was very good, very "Princelike" as far as his dancing and onstage persona was concerned. Its a shame he was not more of a success because his second album was very good indeed.

I would say Prince was the closest thing to being on similar impact of Michael Jackson in terms of being an icon (talent etc)
And to answer your question for me its Rick James even though I love prince more. This is before Rick took a loaded gun and shot his career in the face.

Oh Gosh, it was the 80's.
EVERYBODY was in the closet. Eddie Murphy, George Michael, Punky Brooster, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise.... EVERYBODY. Prince wasn't the only one in the closet. I mean, Prince and Tom are the only ones left in the closet now, but you know.

Yeah. Here's why: Like Prince, El - Played instruments (in the studio, and sometimes on stage). - Wrote his own songs. - Had the long, full-head of curly hair. - Had what was always called a "pretty" face with a mustache. - Could barely dance. - Is light (but actually is "mixed," lol). - Sings in falsetto. - Wore interesting clothes. - Is a Gemini. .... Jesse Johnson for sure. But i dont think he was cloning prince. Or copying prince. I think Jesse was doin his own thing. I mean jesse was influenced by the mpls sound and look along with prince. And because prince was more poplular than jesse it kinda looks like he copied him. It sucks because Jesse is a damn good performer

Truth be told, none of the people mentioned above were close to being Prince in the 80's. They were either associates, imitators, Madonna, or Michael Jackson.
Prince in the 80's, and still now, is very much his own thing. It is rare for someone to be as diverse in sound/style/talent and still be AS hugely popular as Prince is. "New Power slide...."
