No other Prince song before of since has had the power of that moment. I have songs that I like more.I have Prince songs that I play more. But no other song will ever will have the majesty and glory of that moment. NICE!!! I totally hear you. Purple Majesty, people should just stop trying to knock Purple Rain, it's nothing wrong with having a signature song like that. And it touches people. There aren't too many renditions of this song that I don't like. It transends time or an era, it reaches middle america and the fringes

So yes, I would agree with you that there will never be another beautiful love song like this. Never ever...this just stands above the rest. that's wonderful. But I was just taking a piss. Dude take your piss. But I stand by what I said.

I've been listening to the Purple Rain Tour Finale bootleg (Easter, '85) lately. And when the show finishes with that 20 minute version of Purple Rain.... I just get all giddy and teary-eyed and full of ... what... Prince, or something. And to all those people that say they don't want to hear him play it at shows anymore, GTFO with that shit. Purple Rain is a powerful song... but not on its own. Purple Rain is an emotional painting of the climax of a very moving story that works in it as a whole. If we had not seen the conflict of the Kidd trying to over come his father's oppresive shadow and his own inner demons to repeat the mistakes imprinted in his behavior through his disfunctional life, then Purple Rain would have little impact.
Without the movie, I would say the song would have been little noticed. Had the movie been a disaster, the song would have all but been much less played on the radio. The movie came at a perfect time, it was the virtual birth of MTV and the music video per say, and the movie was at best a montage of music videos supporting an extrememely toxic story line, but that is a topic in itself. I have often believed that without the movie, Purple Rain would have been simply a follow up to 1999. As far as a song as powerful as Purple Rain, I think Prince has had plenty. They simply did not have the total package that Purple Rain the movie,, as well as the timing it was released, to push them in to orbit. We are all so full of here

I'll have to disagree, because many people heard the song before they saw the movie and it blew them away. I'm one of those people, I heard this song over and over before I saw the movie. And the crowd reaction to the live recording of it at 1st Avenue in 1983 was awesome. That extra long intro just made me emotional.

Yes, but do you think it would have been "as big" without the movie? Let's face it, I have never seen an album do what Purple Rain did since. We are all so full of here

The album stand alone, I mean before the movie was out the released songs were electric. 17 Days When Doves Cry Let's Go Crazy Erotic City etc etc I was hearing the music from the album + Glamorous Life + Sugar Walls all over the place. Yet of course the movie took it up 10 notches, yes I agree with that. But again, the number of people who hadn't seen the movie yet, yet were crazy about it. But I do agree the movie took up higher

Of late I have been moved by Colonized Mind.
But I have always considered Chrystal Ball his magnus opus, the one that shows off ALL his chops: playing (multiple), arranging, songwriting, producing, etc.

"The Morning Papers" The ultimate power ballad. I win. Good Card played but Purple Rain, Live, on Record on Video, on Film ...still kills it .... But the "The Morning Papers" is just such a great song, sound ...one of his best power / slow rock jams! and Gold...what a song....Colonized mind is very good as well!
