I do not think you guys understand what "epic songs" are in this thread..they have songs that are slow jams or ballads up there which is not what it is.
We are talking Prince's "Big Productions" i.e.: 3 Chains O Gold Crystal Ball All My Dreams Planet Earth The Dance Electric (12 min version) Temptation Gold Purple Rain The Cross (can be considered) Dreamer (can be considered) too... Songs that sound like concert closers basically are supposed to be entered here Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I agree with the songs you listed as fitting this category. Like others, I am not saying that any are better or worse than Purple Rain. I am just categorizing Prince songs that fall into this genre of his music. Just curious, would you consider any of the following in this category? SquirrelMeat said: I like Purple Rain, but I'd agree with those who say its way overrated. I skip it on playback and I wouldn't miss it dropped from the live set. Its simply overplayed.
Live, Gold was superior in every way. I think The Cross, The Ladder, Still would stand all time, Gold, She Gave Her Angels, Saviour, and Last December are all better "epics" than PR. Of those, only The Cross and Gold have a chance against PR, the others are just inferior or just dumb/bad (Saviour, Still would stand, etc.)...oh,and The Ladder was a lame ripoff of PR to begin with... PR was a Top3 hit for a reason... [Edited 4/25/10 17:41pm]

I've been listening to the Purple Rain Tour Finale bootleg (Easter, '85) lately. And when the show finishes with that 20 minute version of Purple Rain.... I just get all giddy and teary-eyed and full of ... what... Prince, or something. And to all those people that say they don't want to hear him play it at shows anymore, GTFO with that shit. [Edited 4/23/10 5:22am] Not true. I was disappointed he relented and played Purple Rain on the ONA tour in Manchester back in 2002, some bint behind me was screaming for it after EVERY song, even during quiet moments, maybe he heard the annoying cow. I was so aggravated i wanted to punch her in the neck, but being in a public place, i couldn't really get away with it. Best i could do was a dripping with sarcasm "happy now?" when the opening bars started. [Edited 4/26/10 11:55am]

there's nothing that beats PR, it's his signature song. In reference about these lyrics being cheesy, aren't most of P's lyrics cheesy?
In any case, I can't quite see P doing any of the other songs suggested at the superbowl half time show. For fucks sake this era and song defined the man in the mainstream. This song is quintessentially Prince. Period. I ain't getting my lighter out for no other shit.

To me the ultimate Purple Rain moment was July 27,1984 around 8:45 pm CST when Purple Rain was played in the Shady Brooke Cinemas and 500 people were waving in unison to the song.
No other Prince song before of since has had the power of that moment. I have songs that I like more.I have Prince songs that I play more. But no other song will ever will have the majesty and glory of that moment.

Prince cam full circle on the Batman album with Arms of Orion. There will never, ,EVER... EEEEEVVVVVEEEERRRR be a Prince song as powerful, as inspiring, as shamelessly melodic....dare I say it... AS PERFECT as Arms of Orion. Not then.. not now.. .not ever. Yeah....I truly love that song. I love Purple Rain...but it's like an anthem, like you said. As far as beautiful love songs go, "The Arms of Orion" has my heart. So yes, I would agree with you that there will never be another beautiful love song like this. Never ever...this just stands above the rest. that's wonderful. But I was just taking a piss.

Each and every "epic big song" in his discography is a result of "Purple Rain", so no surprise they are gonna get compared, or that all of them will be inferior.
While I can agree with the fact that "Purple Rain" unfairly overshadows practically everything he did since then, as a song, it's definitely one of a kind and timeless, certainly not overrated.
