For me, Saviour is an horrible song.

He made me hate Purple Rain for playing it 3 times per second and, that aside, he made lots of better songs. Too many to mention.

Saviour is like a modern day mozart composition. It's one of the rare times all elements of P's genius come together.

The fact that PR was played so many times doesn't matter to me, each time he played it live it was unique ..like sex, had it but never the same twice. wink

I agree with you 1,000% on the greatness of "Saviour".

But I don't think he has a more epic song than "Purple Rain". I'm trying to think of one that would close a concert better, but honestly I can't.

Right as this moment, as I listen to the live version from 2009, I would have to say a really "big" song for me is "When I Lay My Hands On You":

The message you're about to hear is not meant for transmission
Should only be accessed in the privacy of your mind
Words are intense so my dear if you dare to listen
Take off your clothes
And Meet me between the lines

Are you ready for the touch that makes you go insane
Breast to lips to cheek to mane
I'll pull your hair, you'll feel no pain
Are you ready for the only forever we'll both obtain
The only joy in this forsaken game
You'll feel ashamed and ordained
When I lay my hands on you

The touch you're about to feel is the one you've been wishin' for
It's been here like an echo inside your space and time
It's about to get freaky cause the places that I'll be kissin'
Are the places that no other man could ever find
Oh wind up ready for...

The touch that makes you go insane
Breast to lips to cheek to mane
I'll pull your hair, you'll feel no pain
Are you ready for the only forever we'll both obtain
The only joy in this forsaken game (God forbid)
You'll feel ashamed and ordained (God forbid)
When I lay my hands on you

Nobody knows
Like God knows
Where the deepest part of your river flows
Snap Snap
Undo these nylon hose
Around your thigh my finger goes slowly
Like a cat tip-toes
Until I reach the cat's nose
I will touch thee in the softest manner
Like Europa in the hands of Santana

Are you ready for the touch that makes you go insane
Breast to lips to cheek to mane
I'll pull your hair, you'll feel no pain
Are you ready for the only forever we'll both obtain
The only joy in this forsaken game
You'll feel ashamed and ordained
When I lay my hands on you
When I lay my hands on you

I've been listening to the Purple Rain Tour Finale bootleg (Easter, '85) lately. And when the show finishes with that 20 minute version of Purple Rain.... I just get all giddy and teary-eyed and full of ... what... Prince, or something. And to all those people that say they don't want to hear him play it at shows anymore, GTFO with that shit.

Crystal Ball is pretty epic & a mighty long song like Purple Rain. I would say that I would prefer CB to PR but I wasn't diehard until long after PR came out.

I dunno. Anna Stesia is alright, but I kind of roll my eyes at it. It's too self-consciously arty and over the top. The difference between PR and AS is like the difference between, say, How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore and Condition Of The Heart. one's a really heartfelt, simple, in the moment feeling and the other sounds like he sat down and contrived to wrench some emotion and baroque artsiness out of what he had on the page.

Are you really trying to lambast an artist for pushing the envelope and trying something differently musically?! Its what an artist SHOULD do - otherwise everyone would sound like New Kids on the Block!

You may not like AS or COH, but you can't assault an artist for doing something new or different. Not that AS is "self-consciouly artsy" anyway - its fairly straight-forward in composition terms. The production is excellent. And the lyrics are highly personal and based on an actual experience. It fits perfectly on the massively complex work that was the Lovesexy album, but that's just my opinion and you are equally entitled to yours wink

Crystal Ball is one of his great works, no doubt about that!

I'm not going to get drawn on this "is this song better than that"? Its largely pointless and hard to quantify. CB and PR are too different to be compared anyway. if you want to compare, PR has to go up against songs like "Holy River", "Last December" etc They are all individual works with their own character and "moments" - how do we define what is "better" about it? Better melody? What does that mean? Better guitar playing? Again, same problem.

People are actually just going to compare on personal taste - i.e.which one do they like more. So, again, its pretty meaningless,

Blimey....does it really need spelling out?

After you said that AnnaStesia is " too self-consciously arty and over the top" and that Condition of the Heart "sounds like he sat down and contrived to wrench some emotion and baroque artsiness out of what he had on the page" you then proceeded to claim that "I just said I find Purple Rain more satisfying and pure". Clearly, that is not the case.

There was no need for you to repeat them. Hope that has helped with all your confusion. wink And you claim that you are sane compared to me?!! lol

Wow - you really are the king of cheap shots, aren't you? You struggle for anything intelligent to come back with, so resort to personal insults. On another thread, you questioned my sanity with no provocation at all and on this thread you offer me an anti-depressant when again you have run out of anything worthwhile to say.

Eat your beef, rather than smearing it on the .org razz

Look, you need something if you don't see that the two things you quoted by me say the same thing. All I said was that I enjoyed and got more emotional impact from the simpler, more pure, raw presentation of things like Purple Rain and The Beautiful Ones over things that are laden down with performance and production flourishes. Yet somehow you construed that as an assault on artistry.

Whatever. If you can't do any better than to go into hysterics and extrapolate some bizarre agenda from my comments, please stop having an opinion on the way I personally enjoy music. Barring that, at least keep it to yourself.

Thank you.

The Love We Make is better and sounds more importnant.

Still Would Stand All Time is much more sophisticated and a masterpiece, especially the end.

Hmmmmm....I personally love "Condition of the Heart", "The Beautiful Ones", and "The Arms of Orion" (that duet with Sheena Easton). They might be considered contenders to PR in my books.....but as far as "rock anthems" go..I run to Purple Rain everytime.

Purple Rain was an almost perfect anthem. But it was a bit unpolished, as if prince was still experimenting on how to perfect his song written skills.

Prince cam full circle on the Batman album with Arms of Orion.

There will never, ,EVER... EEEEEVVVVVEEEERRRR be a Prince song as powerful, as inspiring, as shamelessly melodic....dare I say it... AS PERFECT as Arms of Orion. Not then.. not now.. .not ever.

Yeah....I truly love that song. I love Purple Rain...but it's like an anthem, like you said. As far as beautiful love songs go, "The Arms of Orion" has my heart. fallinluv So yes, I would agree with you that there will never be another beautiful love song like this. Never ever...this just stands above the rest.

I like Purple Rain, but I'd agree with those who say its way overrated. I skip it on playback and I wouldn't miss it dropped from the live set. Its simply overplayed.

Live, Gold was superior in every way.

I think The Cross, The Ladder, Still would stand all time, Gold, She Gave Her Angels, Saviour, and Last December are all better "epics" than PR.
