Identify the Influence!

Throughout his career Prince has mainly been an "originator."

But, on occassion, Prince has acknowldeged other artist's influence, either tacitly or not.

For example,

"3 Chains O Gold" is an obvious "homage" to Queen.
"The Work" is complete James Brown.
"Condition of the Heart" ditto for Joni Mitchell.
"Walk Don't Walk" Sly Stone.
"Dreamer" Jimi Hendrix
The title of "Symbol" album had a predecessor in "Led Zeppelin 4"
The line "in through the out door" is the title of Led Zeppelin's final album.
The cover of "Around the World in a Day" is reminiscent of The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's"

Other examples?

In these times Not One Can be The Original thought...Nothing is left to be Original...All thoughts Come From One Source....If Duplication is Occuring Then the message must hold a valuable Learning within it....History tends to repeat it self. the world of musical lyrics follows this trend as well.

Major influences I hear in Prince songs: Hendrix, James Brown, Parliament, and Sly and the Family Stone. I dare anyone to disagree with this! confused

In fact, there is a section in one of the solos on Peach that is a direct lift from ZZTop, though as a nod, rather than a steal (before the plagiarism promoters start jumping up and down lol )

Harlepolis

Great thread!

Housequake - Parliament

Forever In My Life - DIRECT homage to Sly. Hell, even the mannerism of Prince/His band from THE MOVIE version brings to mind Sly & The Family Stone performances.

The Beautiful Ones - I hear a lil' bit of Queen in there.

Adore - Patti LaBelle.

Willing & Able - Aretha Franklin. I know she doesn't get mentioned alot in his music discussions, but I hear ALOT of Aretha echos in his music, esp when they have gospel overtones.

Purple Music/Others Here With Us - His mind smile

I noticed something though, Sly Stone's influence was EXTREMELY pronounced in his 80s music, whereas he seemed to rely more on James Brown esp after he hooked up with Maceo.

The whole trippy, off beat and dark Camille period brings Sly Stone to mind, which I absloutly love.
