"The Same December"

So I'm listening to the “Chaos and Disorder” album and “The Same December” is spinning right now and I am just blown away by this little rock ditty! It’s been what…14 years since this album came out? It’s still fan-effing-tastic!

This IS a powerful, fun and rocking track. Prince hit home for me on this one. The guitar parts are killer and I love the quirkiness of the lyrics and vocals. It has subtle elements of a pop style rock number but also glows with oddities of operatic type rock. I dig it!

"U only know what u know
U only see what your heart will show
U only love when your soul remembers
We all come from the same December
And in the end that's where we'll go
So let's go!"

What say you?

Man, I've always liked this track a LOT. Some people say it's cheesy but I say give me a glass of wine to go with it, and it's all good.

Yeah this was always my favorite song on the album. I couldn't understand people saying the album was an insult to fans, a lazy throwaway album that was not meant to be released, and this is like the best rock song he did all decade.

It's just maybe a bit of a showoff song, but it's great anyway.

Like the track, really like the album, i prefer Chaos & Disorder 2 Come and The Gold Experience. I cant really understand people calling this a throwaway album either.

I think it's partly due to the disclaimer that the music was intended for private use only, not intended for release.

But my feeling was that that was a way of Prince trying to act humble, or present the album as sort of a new Dirty Mind (which was supposedly just demo tapes, too). I felt he was saying "I didn't even really try and listen to how great it is!"

I totally agree, i was in a very small class that loved Chaos day one, and now years later still dont skip over it, alright maybe that awful "I rock therefore I am" but all in all, it was a great time for Prince interms of his playing and live feel on records which completely was lost on Emancipation and why i still say that record is very very overrated, some gems, but alot of lackluster material that should be shelved.

And i agree all the "press" surrounding him didnt help, "slave" on his face, the attitude of walking on a show playing then walking off without a word, these antics all took away from the material, but honestly as strong as it was, i dont think he really gave a shit where it landed, and still doesnt care.

You know, I didn't listen to P for 15 years since the last LP I bought in 1995--the Gold Experience, which I loved. For the last 6 months I have been listening to all the music I missed out on, old and new, and I find that some songs just grow on me, including those from Chaos and Disorder. I find gems on every album--some I like more than others. "The Same December" is one that keeps growing on me the more I listen. With P it always has to be more than one listening experience for the more recent studio recordings... cool

Very good song.

Next to symbol, my second favorite album of the 1990s. I remembered SPIN magazine listing it was one of the best albums no one heard back in 1996.

This album gets a bad rap for no reason. It's GREAT. Short, to the point...thematic. My OWN fingers get blisters when I listen to it.

...OW! my damn fingers!

I'm not feeling it. I only like it a little from 2.21 to 3.08
Lyrics are good though as they mostly are. The blend into Right the Wrong is perfect though.

Best song on the album and a really good rock song. Unlike many other rock songs it's also got thoughtful lyrics.

And unlike many other songs in general, the music doesn't run out of steam after the second chorus. I especially like the part starting with: "Until the demons fall as far as anyone can fall..."

nice album, altho there are a couple of songs on there that keep it from
being a straight up rock n roll classic prince album.

i still prefer to listen to it like this:

01. chaos and disorder
02. i like it there
03. the ride
04. dinner with delores
05. same december
06. calhoun sq
07. into the light
08. i will
09. da bang
10. empty room
11. had u

that makes for such a tight, excellent album that it rivals anything
else he released in the 90's imo.

always loved "the same december". the video was nice too. a period
in prince's career that i miss a lot.

I didn't like this album when it came out.

Now, after the disappointings of Musicology, 3121, P.Earth, LF/MPLS and (type the new album's title here) I've learned to love it.

Interesting. I will have to configure a version in the order you suggested. I do like "I Rock Therefore I Am" and "Dig U Better Dead". But this full guitar based version you mentioned seems like some good rocking! Thanks!

that version of "the ride" i have on this configuration is the long, original
one from the "undertaker" album.

i can see how it might drag the album down a bit for some people since it's
such a long, slow jam but imo it fits perfectly. the way it kinda segues in
to "dinner with delores", which kickstarts the album again on a breezy and
quirky note, is just great imo.
