Written in the early 80's, released later

Looking through this thread, http://prince.org/msg/7/320445 , I'm first taken by how much material Prince wrote in the 1981-1983 period. He released Controversy, 1999, Vanity 6, 2 Time albums and had begun Purple Rain, Apollonia 6 and Ice Cream Castles. Then there's all the unreleased songs, and of those I'm surprised to see how many were revisited later:

Tick, Tick, Bang
Baby I’m A Star
Feel U Up
Jerk Out
Raspberry Beret
Girl O’ My Dreams
Boom, Boom, Can’t U Feel The Beat Of My Heart
Girl
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
New Position
Strange Relationship
Teacher, Teacher
U Should Be Mine
Wet Dream Cousin (Instrumental)
Wonderful Ass
Electrocution (Instrumental)
I Wonder
She’s Always In My Hair
We Can Funk

Obviously his early '80s compositions were some of his favorites for inspiration for a while. Makes me wonder also how many of these unreleased songs were re-worked and released under different titles (e.g. "Let's Rock", "Dear Uncle George"...)

Yeah, that era was a gold mine of Purple Funk to say the least. A lot of P fam/fans rave how the kid was in excellent form. I love the music of yesteryear but, I also love the new music to. It's all apart of the experience.

you can add Endorphinmachine (originally called Machine)

and Dance On

Both of these early versions were on Prince's website where you could 'mix' the various elements of the track, along with Let's Work (aka Let's Rock).

the mp3's have been released on the Work It Boot
....

Where did you get that info?
I think that's not correct.

can't remember the website name was it NPGMC? (when it went to a lifetime fee)

the one where you could navigate through different rooms.

well one of the rooms was a mixing desk set-up where you could play around with the various instrumental parts of some songs, those songs were quote clearly labelled as:

Let's Work (coulda be named Let's Rock - can't remember)
Dance On
Machine (this one sounded like a Prince only Demo - similar to Dirty mind era, it was basically Endorphinmachine)

can anyone else confirm this as it was a while back!

Yes, those samples were there and are included on Work It 2.0 Disc 34 but my question is where in the world did you read that Endorphinemachine could be a reworking of Machine and that Dance On was also from the early 80s...

If I Love U 2Nite was given to Mayte, Prince recorded his outtake around 87 but I believe it was written earlier.

Originally recorded with the Rebels in 1978.

Mayte covered If I Love U 2Nite. It was given to Mica Paris in the 80s.

Not true.

Endorphinmachine was titled "Rock Machine" in the control room mixing desk on
the old NPG Music Club Site. It was the only track to have it's title altered
(Probably for religious reasons). All the tracks were mixable multi-channel
versions of the 'new master' re-recordings of the respective songs, rather
than the original tracks.

It's a completely different song to the unreleased and uncirculating Grand
Central Corporation track "Machine".

Urgh. So he actually did those then? I never knew if he was bullshitting about re-recording his back catalogue, and then just gave up after the response to 1999 the new master.

Is the Starfish & Coffee from the Muppets Tonight from the New Masters then, or just a one off because it fit the Muppets style?

Originally recorded with the Rebels in 1978.

'You' which later became 'U' and was given to Paula Abdul was also from The Rebels sessions.

'Wouldn't you love to love me?' released in 87 by Taja Sevelle in fact was first recorded in 1976 and then updated in 1978 and then again in 1986.

Interestingly, the updated 1986 version was offered to Michael Jackson for possible inclusion on 'Bad'.He rejected it,so Prince gave it to Taja Sevelle instead.

I have a sneaky feeling most of the last few albums is 'old stuff'.... Maybe he's testing the water with peoplecsaying he's not as tight as he used to be by putting out old stuff to see if people moan just because it's 'new'

Wasn't Rave Un2 The Joy fantastic also written originally just before mid-80s? Or was it around the time of Batman?

Some say it emerged during the Lovesexy sessions but most say it was written in '88. Tim Burton rejected it for Batman and it missed the cut for the Love Symbol album. First time I heard it was on the Trojan Horse aftershow, and between that performance and the samples in Batmix & 200 Balloons, Rave was the vault track that we were all dying to hear. And then it got released...
