Star-Ledger music critic Jay Lustig - Late Night with Prince ALL IN A DAY'S WORK - Jay Lustig looks back over his music jurno career !
There have been so many experiences I never could have anticipated before I began doing this. I slept in my car for four nights while covering Woodstock ’94 — I didn’t want to bother with a tent — and saw the fires at Woodstock ’99. I traveled to Barcelona for the start of the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band reunion tour in 1999 and to Cleveland for the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. I’ve seen Kiss in Detroit, the Sex Pistols at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo., and the Spice Girls in West Palm Beach, Fla. My latest night: Prince at Irving Plaza in New York. He started the concert/jam session at 2:50 a.m. and went to 5 a.m. Nicest interviewee: Joan Baez, who said, at one point, “We’ve talked enough about me. Tell me about you.” Angriest interviewee: Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, who treated me to an obscenity-laced tirade about MTV. Smartest thing I ever did: Started wearing custom-made earplugs to concerts, in the late ’90s. Worst shows: Both by Meat Loaf, whose voice, in both cases, was so shot he should have postponed.
