A while back when Bobby Z went to Paisley Park, Prince and Larry unleashed a religious rant which included homophobia, and how homosexuals were doomed to go to hell. As close as Bobby and Prince were, Bobby said he was disgusted and didn't care if he ever saw Prince again. Matt Fink has gotten the same sort of religious brow beating from Prince, although I'm not sure if the homophobia was part of his experience. That is indeed fucked up. dont believe the hype. What would be a good new name for the band? Maybe something lifted from a more recent song, like "The Word" or something. Prince and the Word. I dunno. Any ideas? Prince and The Parade! "Its flier to B hungry than fat"

Ernest makes this up as he goes along. the thing is, I actually believe it. but I'm trying to reconcile the timeline of that story compared to the last time he worked with them. I know they probably won't be working together any time soon again, since his lawyers sent them a letter last year asking them to not mention him in interviews any more. but the story ernest is relaying from other band members doesn't really ring true, since he's worked with homosexuals as recently as less than 3 years ago. got all huffy about that quote in the LA Times(?) last year, and appeared on a lesbian's television show to promote his album last year.

Oh and Ernest: the ultimate NPG should always include Levi! I said the only real version (for me) was the mid 90's version, after the cleared the fat that was The Game Boyz. Levi was a good musician, but I preferred the stripped down version of the group. However, during that time Prince could have used a rhythm guitarist. Levi always seemed detached in some way, to me. The chemistry was different w/ him.

He seemed to have more respect for his NPG band. Sonny T and Bland were just so on point and disciplined. Compare that to the SOTT and Lovesexy rehersals where Prince would frequently go off on the band and they'd argue right back. When he dropped Tommy Elm and just stuck with Morris Hayes, that was a powerful Quartet.
Now, I REALLY liked his Musicology band. Horns were off the hook (Maceo, Candy, and some of Greg's dirty Trombone!), Mike Scott was killin folx, Blackwell was FLASH, and Rhonda was a great bassist for this type of band. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

However, this idea of Prince being a homophobe is based on a lot of speculation and "heard it from a friend" type of stuff. There is little proof and the evidence to back it up is very thin. You ask what is to gain by a band member to make stuff up? Why does anyone make anything up? Lies aren't just told when people serve to gain something. People just say things like they see it...sometimes it's the truth, often it's not. Don't get me wrong, if you think Prince is a raging homophobe and choose to support him anyways, that's your right. I just don't see any proof. A lot of former Prince associates have talked a lot of shit throughout the years. Who is to tell how accurate any of it is? "New Power slide...."

BOBBY Z SAID IT. MATT FINK HAS SAID IT (he got a religious brow beating and attempt at conversion by Larry and Prince at Paisley Park in about 2001). Both are PERSONAL experiences with Prince. Call them liars if you wish, but the have no reason to lie.[/quote]

Matt and Bobby both are quite willing to work with Prince again. At least they told me that personally at The Family Jamm. So did Matts father who was there also (r.i.p.).

I talked to Fink a lot during those years. I talked to him via cell while he was at The Family Jamm too. I didn't say he wasn't willing to work with Prince again. Bobby Z. is the one who heard the homophobic rant first hand, and was disgusted by it. It's not too far fetched. Prince believes what he believes, but the disgust lies in how polar opposite he is now compared to what he was even 15 years ago. 1995 saw him making some of his best music and fighting a war that he would eventually win in some regards. 15 years later, he's telling women their place in the world, going on racial tirades on albums, etc etc. So much for a new breed leader. The revolution will not be televised - unless he has the rights to the broadcast. LOL

I am just saying that your info is still 2nd hand and basically gossip. It still amounts to "he said she said" stuff. I have a friend that knows/works with Tony M. I have another friend who is a MPLS musician that frequently talks with Michael B. I have been told stories about Prince that are in opposition to the ones you are hearing. However, it's like the telephone game. I take it all with a grain of salt. Bottom line: I don't know Prince, I don't think you do either. There is no concrete proof of anything, just stories from "friends" and whispers in the locker room. Believe what you want, I need more evidence to make such accusations about a person. Okay let me say it again....BOBBY Z SAID IT. MATT FINK SAID IT. That's FIRST hand information from their mouths. They were in person w/ Prince. When I talked to Fink, it had only been a few weeks since his sit-down w/ Prince. It's one degree of separation from Prince. That degree being the other person in the room w/ Prince. That's not gossip on their part, that was their life for those few minutes, or hour or whatever.

NDRU said: errant said: considering the constant line-up rotations, and the fact that he's now using completely different line-ups based on the kind of show he's doing or who's available, I don't really see why he needs a named band at all. it's not like he's putting it on the cover of his albums any more. The "Lovesexy Band" was never really named as such, and it was just fine. the only purpose the NPG name even serves any more is for branding and something to shout-out during his more hip-hop oriented tracks, a la "Darkchild" or whatever. and to refer to himself in the 3rd person without using his own name. True, and when he tours it's just "Prince" Having a band name has always been unnecessary when it's obvious who everyone has come to see. Well in the 80's the band was very integrated in2 Prince's image the band represented Prince in a way the post 1980's bands never did. I don't think I'm the only who wanted to see Prince with the pre or Revolution or the SOTT band
