Prince and the OPG - i.e. old power generation - just how long can they be called "new".

I thought the NPG was totally lame from day one. Terrible.
The Revolution, on the other hand, I LOVED because it's kinda psychedelic, 60s, and New Romantic all at the same time. He's got absolutely nothing to prove to anybody anymore and it hurts him artistically - which is why he won't come up with another great name.

Tony was the NPG, he's just kept the name to remind him of what he's lost. I'd actually like the MPLSound. Prince and the MPLSound can't be beat suckas, as it were. Maybe Prince and the Bump Squad. Of course the Revolution is never a bad idea. Damon Dickson: Is it hair, a hat, or a dead cat?

A while back when Bobby Z went to Paisley Park, Prince and Larry unleashed a religious rant which included homophobia, and how homosexuals were doomed to go to hell. As close as Bobby and Prince were, Bobby said he was disgusted and didn't care if he ever saw Prince again. Matt Fink has gotten the same sort of religious brow beating from Prince, although I'm not sure if the homophobia was part of his experience.

The name is a bit silly, but the problem I have with the NPG is that there really is no band called the NPG persay.
Prince just has a revolving door of talent that he throws together from time to time--sort of like a large pool of musicians that he mixes up. When other bands replace members, it's a huge deal--this is because the band actually becomes something different. Red Hot Chillie Peppers with a band member from Janes Addiction = something quite different from the original. Prince is constantly mixing up these musicians and rearranging his band--and it's actually refreshing and fun when he does that. But you can hardly claim that NPG 2008/9 was the same thing as NPG 1993. It might as well be a different band. Oh, and did I mention the name is a bit silly?

Prince has always rotated talent in and out though. I think, for him, "New Power Generation" is an idealism, and whoever joins him shares that idea (in his mind, mind you). I also think the idea of constantly having a new band name every 5 years would be an ongoing joke. He already changed his name a half dozen time, but his band has only had two names like this. It was a big deal with the NPG was first crowned in 1991, but after that, what's to change? Why? Band members aside, it's always Prince's music - period, no matter who is playing it. Besides (yes I'm speaking for everyone here so roll up your sleeves for a response) everyone knows that the only REAL version of NPG was Sonny T., Michael B., Tommy Elms, Morris Hays, and Prince, with Mayte shakin' her groove thing. And yes, other bands changing names is a huge deal sometimes, but they don't go changing their name either. Maroon 5 lost their original drummer after the first album, first tour, and first live CD, yet they came back stronger than ever with their second album. RHCP had a couple of different guitarists and now drummer, yet they're still the RHCP. INXS went on national TV and found a new (temporary) lead singer, but they were still INXS. The list is endless of this story. Almost none of them retitled their band because of a changing member. Jeff Lynne is the only real member of ELO, but he still uses that name. Same with "New Power Generation". It's Prince's brand for a band, that's it.

Really Funny, I was just thinking this the other day too! The New Power generation has been around for 18 years or so. Its not new, its not powerful, and there is a generation gap now.
How about "Prince and the Family Nelson" or "Prince and the Current Line Up" "Prince and the Du Jours" "Prince and the Paycheck Players" "Prince and the Also-Rans" "Prince and those Not Currently Working on Other Projects" "Prince and the Others" "Prince and the Contributors" Or to align with his current ideology: "Prince and the Rainbow Children" [Edited 4/15/10 7:59am] "It's all good when U no the only fame is the light that comes from God, and the joy U get 2 say His name."

Is NPG still the name of the band(s), or is it just Prince's record label moniker? If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

How about Prince has a contest to change the band name? The entry fee is $31.21.
After a few thousand entries, Prince has an epiphany, changes his mind and keeps all the money.

The Revolution will always be the best name and one of the greatest periods in the Prince career.
Having said that...NPG is 20 years ago... so... Prince and The New Breed Prince and Uptown All in all, this might be the last we see of Prince for a long time. Some people tell me I've got great legs...
