I think it was a poor choice for a single. The song is okay, but it just doesn't sound like a "single" to me.If they insisted on releasing a mellow song as a single,I would have chosen the superior "And God Created Woman".

to those of you saying "P Control"....
Come on..you know the radio stations wouldn't dare play that song! And if they did,all of the cuss words would have to be edited out,and the song would sound silly.

Even though the version I am familiar with is very basic and I don't know if Prince gave the song to someone else...
It may have a dated sound, "Don't Say U Love Me," is a great dance song. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Well, he relased "Sexy MF" and refused to give radio stations a clean version to play. "P. Control" wasn't aimed at getting massive radioplay anyway. It was intended to be a club hit (there were loads of remixes made for this). It was also intended to be released as a double A-Side with "Eye Hate U" on an EP titled "The Hate Experience".

Some good non-single songs have been mentioned thus far but I wonder how well many of them would have done on radio at their time of release.
The one that I always thought WAS a single because of all the radio and club play it received was DMSR. True he needed 1999, Corvette and Delirious to break the album on the pop charts, but surely DMSR would have fared better than Let's Pretend as a fourth single, certainly on (what was then known as) "Black" radio in 1982-1983.

It's the backbone of Camille, Dream Factory, Crystal Ball & SOTT. A corking track that would have done incredibly well. ,

Odd that he refused to release a clean version to radio when he performed a self-censored version on that "live" special aired on TV; he also did that same cleaned up version when I saw him at the Turtles in-store in Atlanta.

I like most of the single choices over the years, but I've never liked 'Betcha By Golly Wow' as a single or song. Seemed to kill the excitement around Emancipation's release back in '96. My choice would've been 'Right Back...' or 'Somebody's somebody' as the first single. I just say "Empty Room".
What a big hit this might have been when he would have released that during his WB period with the right video and promotion...

I agree.I think he should have chosen "Sleep Around" as the first single.A strong,UPTEMPO song to get people excited about the album.

Like most rap songs when played on the radio? pretty much, lol. I fear that a radio edit would have used "aooohhhwaaaa" in place of the word "pussy"....like they did with "Sexy MF".
