Gohi

I can't believe people think From The Lotus... is a bad opener. I love it. It's very different from traditional Prince openers, it gets you into the album with its chilled-out yet rockin vibe and it has some delicious playing from the NPG trio along with some tasty synth overdubs by Prince.

Strongest: Purple Rain ("Let's Go Crazy")

Weakest: Graffiti Bridge ("I Can't Stop This Feeling I Got"...not a terrible song, but not an album opener)

Other really good ones: Sign O The Times (title track)
Controversy (title track)
Gold Experience (P Control)
Lotus Flow3r ("From The Lotus..." A good instrumental as opposed to the insipid "77 Beverly Park", or the alternative "Dynasty" theme)

I thought the beginning of New Power Soul was horrible. I thought the song got better but the way it opened up I thought sounded cheesy @ 1st.

As an opener Let's Go Crazy is an obvious great one but I thought Crystal Ball was very cool. 3121 was a great funky opener too! I kinda consider Boom part of the 1st song On Lotusflow3r since it's instrumental @ 1st & Boom kicks some serious ass, I love it. Every time I hear it I hit repeat. biggrin

Strongest: For me, definitely 1999 is the strongest & also the most classic to his legacy. I Wanna Be Your Lover, Let's Go Crazy also very good.

Weakest: Actually maybe For You lol totally out of character, not bad, just misleading, un-funky. I am also not a fan of P Control. But my final answer goes to North. The worst of the 4 songs, just dull & repetitive.

Generally I like Prince's first songs a lot.

For U being his first album who could that opener be considered 'totally out of character or misleading'? and why does everything Prince do have to be 'funky' isn't that putting the artist in a box and telling him he has to play Let's Work style music forever?

if For U is misleading I would say SOTT is misleading as an opener. It made many think the album was going to have a more 'social' edge to it.
As much as I love the song, it would have been a strong opener if the album track was like the live rendition with the electric guitar
