How dare you make me break out the vinyl!
the radio years: Soft & Wet, I was 7 yrs old, too young to buy records but I loved that one on the radio, as well as I Wanna Be Your Lover - my sister had both singles on 45. Remember hearing Head Uptown on the radio (I think, help me out DavidEye), I was SO intrigued w/ this guy. My sister bought Controversy but they would hide it from me b/c of Do Me Baby, didn't want me hearing that. I snuck & played it anyway, really dug Private Joy & Let's Work, the poster wasn't so bad either (my sister had it on her wall). I was officially in love by now... the vinyl years: my first purchase was 1999, that's when I started going back into the catalogue, picked up each one as I could. Meanwhile PR, Around the World In a Day & Parade came out, bought all those of course. Remembered hearing Alexa de Paris & Love or $ in UTCM but not on the album - Parade was my first excursion into searching for B-sides. I found both, which sent me back to collect all the B-sides I could find for Around the World, PR & 1999. I still look for B-sides, force of habit. the cassette years: SOTT was my last vinyl purchase, I'm pretty sure Lovesexy was my first cassette-only purchase. My sister melted my 1999 album in the back of her car & replaced it w/ a cassette, so I have a few albums on cassette (1999, Parade, Batman, D&P, Graffiti Bridge) but not all that lead up to Lovesexy & I'm not sure why. I guess I preferred vinyl still (who wants to fast forward?). I think I went back & got some protegee stuff around this time too (The Time, V6, A6). I have a few B-sides on cassette but the earliest one is Batdance & I have cassette & vinyl so I'm not sure when that hunt started... the CD years: D&P started it off, went back & got the entire collection on CD, not sure how long it took, probably not longer than a few months. Started hunting for B-sides on CD... the video years: first video purchase was the Gett Off video & the D&P Video Collection. Started taping stuff (besides the movies) off TV around this time too (performances, specials & music vids). the boot years: when I was in college some dude who was completely in LOVE with Prince gave me a tape of Small Club. I knew it was great but I rarely listened to it, couldn't really get with the sound of an audience recording. Over the years a few people have given me things here & there. I still find the videos most interesting since I missed the Lovesexy & Nude tours. Audio stuff didn't really turn me out until now... Funny discovery while writing this - I have The Family, Vanity - Wild Animal, & Andre Cymone on vinyl!! LOL!!! Good NESS I'm long winded! I had heard 1999 on the radio once or twice in 1984 and thought it was good, but I didn't know who was singing.
Then I heard the first single of Purple Rain(can't remember which one it was) and I knew I had to buy the album. I went to my local record store but they didn't have it yet, but the had 1999...so I took a chance and bought it instead...2 months later I bought Purple Rain and by the end of 1985 I had all the older albums as well... So it should be somthing like this: 1999 PR Controversy + Dirty Mind +Prince on the same day ATWIAD For you (I think it wasn't available in Sweden until PR got big)

I was seven years old in 1984 and had "Purple Rain" on my wish-list for christmas. I got the album and the tape for Christmas. It was the only thing I listened to for many months. Then I lost interest in Prince. I rediscovered him with the Batman-Soundtrack (I heard "The Future" on radio). I bought that LP but did like it only in parts. Anyway, I bought "Sign O The Times" and a book about Prince after that. I read the whole book and could´nt wait to gat the albums. I bought them in the following oder:
1)Sign O The Times 2)1999 3)Around The World In A Day 3)Parade (both on the same day) 4)Lovesexy 5)Dirty Mind 6)Controversy 7)Prince "Graffiti Bridge" was the first album I bought on it´s release date, as I did with all the albums since then. After I got all the albums, I started collecting the 12-inch-singles and some boots. I got a CD-Player in 1991 and the first Prince-CD I bought was the japanese "New Power Generation EP", followed shortly after that by "Diamonds And Pearls". Since that day, I only buy CDs. See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...
