I almost slit my wrists when Borders Books marked down 3121 by 20% during their holiday sale.

I'm not surprised...and I don't see why it is sad. Prince didn't lose on the deal, the distributor did!

Exactly. In case folks didn't know, there's a couple of fucking wars going on abroad, miners trapped in a mine, a 15 year old girl committed suicide from being bullied to death, and every day another 5 year old dies in a murder/suicide by a deranged parent. And someone's worried that fucking Lotusflow3r is goddamn $4.99??? Didn't someone once say they took it as an insult? Gheezus, get a bloody grip, folks..

PS Target paid a lump sum to Prince most likely, so the promotion was left up to Target for the most part. I don't know what details had Prince doing appearances to assist in that, but I wonder just how much they made on it after a year's time. The thing hasn't even went gold after a year.

Cuz Prince is an arrogant fuckhole that the majority of the working-class American public could give a fuck-all about. He is, to the vast majority, aa talented nostalgia act, and nothing more. Nobody likes Jehovah's unsolicited at their door, nobody likes it preached to in their music. Nobody likes someone flaunting their wealth during a major recession, nobody likes somebody fucking over the hard-working dollar-paying budget-minded working class.

Prince is washed up.

He has a very limited fan base that he can bully around, and like a wet bitch, we just keep on taking the slaps.

my thoughts on this is to buy up Lotusflower, buy up the vanity book and keep it wrapped and buried in some time capsule. When P bites it, he will be around for the long haul, and these things will all of a sudden be in demand.

I think hey hung up the lotusflow3r coat and are done with it.....

and at borders books the 21. nights book which my mom paid $40 for when it first cam out is now $5 I was saddened to hear this I'm going to buy myself four copys of it I have one and then I will have five
[Edited 4/7/10 13:23pm]

Welcome to months ago. The 4.99 thing has been mentioned ad nauseum on here. The 21 Nights book was bound to go on sale at some point. It's 4.99 here as well. Stacks of them. Stacks of Lotus at my local Target too. Just shows that no one cares about that album past the 400,000 that's bought it thus far, over a year's time.

As a comparison, Keith Urban's album, which was released the same week as LotusFlow3r. The album has sold in the US 761,921 copies as of February, 2010. LotusFlow3r, as of the end of 2009, has sold 415,829. That's just over half of Urban's sales to this date. Why? Keith toured, and promoted the album. Even as late as June of last year, he was making new videos for a new single. What was Prince doing in June? Hmmmm, ignoring his birthday probably.

so what Ernest if he was ignoring his birthday, its his day...and whats it have to do with devaluation of music thats at least 1 yr old? be nice...

Sadness for what? There are 3 parties impacted by the Lotuisflow3r deal with Target:

1- Prince made plenty of money on this Target retail deal. He was paid on each and every copy of those brilliant CDs that you see in Target so dont be sad for him.

2- Target is not losing money on those CDs if they were selling them for $10 when the album were released and can now afford to offer them for half that prince. Target is making a profit either way and surely built in their margins on expectations that sales would fall off after the initial release because they had an exclusive on what is essentially an independent album. Target was the only corporation that did any promotion for the record and they were aware of that as well. You cant expect Lotusflow3r to sit on the shelves and be restocked indefinitely like Purple Rain.

3- As for the consumers, lets face it - they are dumber than ever. In a world dominated by talentless hacks and minstrels doing techno garbage and vulgar rap noise, real music and those who still do it are not big commercial draws. If people miss out on it, they are not seeking out real music - and you have to if you want to hear some today because it is not on the radio or TV.

His music is a product. Yes, he's been recording constantly for a long time - but we've been buying. You make it sound like he's doing it out of the kindness of his heart.

But I do agree with you - the LotusFlow3r set was worth a lot more than $11.98 (easily double that). I am surprised that was so cheap without a major tour to promote.
