The 1995 We are the world "Performance"

I just saw this and i just thought it was cool to see Prince up there with a lolipop, especially when quincy tried to hand the mic to Prince. I have a few questions,Was Prince forced to do this? reason y i ask is because he refused to be apart of in 85 so y then? also, where was Michael jackson? its his song right? at 1st i thought i saw MJ but it was Sheila E. Last,i heard that after the performance that Quincy and Prince had harsh words backstage

you'll notice he still isn't actually participating. he's only out there to be a good sport because they (was it the AMA's?) honored him with a lifetime acheivement award or something along those lines at a time when he was basically a punchline and was waging war on the music industry.

No one forces Prince to do anything.

He didn't sing at the thing because he didn't sing on the first one. I found it odd that he was up there anyway.

He didn't really "refuse" to do the 1985 thing.

MJ wasn't at every award show or part of every "We Are The World" rehash. He did it once. There was no reason to do it again. He didn't perform it at Live Aid either.

Standing there like a douchebag, sucking on a lollipop like a 4 year old? It wasn't cool at all. It was bratty at best.

According 2 a blurb about the event in JET magazine back in 1995, Quincy Jones was reportedly outraged, yelling 2 Prince "I don't care what anyone says, You're STILL a prick!" lol

Love me some Prince but this "showing", and the interview with Dick Clark on Amercan Bandstand are classics! lol

True. It was interesting. But the 1995 thing was what was bratty.

It was'nt bratty at all. Even tho Prince did contribute a song to the we are the world album, People still gave him shit. I thought it was cool that he was onstage for the 1995 awards and that he did'nt sing. I would'nt have either.
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

It always disappointed me the two biggest acts in the World at the time never really bothered with Live Aid. They were both thru the roof at the time, i'd have loved to have seen them go up against Queen for best performance. That would have been something impossibly awesome to see.

If you watch the performance, (thats not what i would really call it), Every other person on stage did'nt know what was going on. Definately was not planned. They just had all the performers/ artists come on stage at last minute.
To me Prince did the only thing he could have done. Kept on sucking that lolli!!
lol

Prince was up there to make a point and to be a brat. That whole lollipop thing was hilarious at the time but in retrospect, I find it a bit disrespectful to the cause. If you don't want to be involved with the recording then don't get up on stage and just stand there licking your blowpop. It was like "hey look at me...watch me show these fuckers!" There's always a time and place for that and that '95 schtick was not the time nor the place.

I still love the boo boo but he was in the outfield right there.

Quincey tried to lick Princey's lollipop. hmmm

Agree with you here. Fortunately, it's 15 years later and I'm sure Prince has been putting a lot of what he "did" right. Pity he wasn't invovled because it was a huge success, helped a lot of people and actually that song was the first piano music I ever bought. Still play it. cool

Pur-lease. Dude sucked up to Clive Davis in 1999, begged him to help him score a hit like Carlos Santana.

Which shows Prince does have humility.

He was desperate, he wasn't humble. Clive had him set up, yet Prince failed to show any interest in it, not release the right singles, then blamed Clive for the project's failure. He even bad mouthed Clive later on. Who the fuck does Prince think he is trying to talk shit about, and TO, someone like Clive whose record is better than Prince's when it comes to finding talent, nurturing that talent, or a project to the point that people never forget it.

People know "Smooth" from Santana and Rob Thomas. People wouldn't know the first line of "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold".

True...
Prince hasnt made too many good choices in singles in quite some time. Why would Clive resurect Santana and make millions for countless other artists, and somehow manage to fail with Prince? I dont think Clive did...Prince failed.

Overall, It probably is due to Princes Album just not being that good.

However, for once, I think Prince showed greater business acumen than Clive.
As I recollect, Prince wanted to get on and make the video for TGRES, while the song was fresh, but Clive had him rolling round Europe to promote the album. Didn't they fall out over this?

Overall it's not that great, BUT there are good radio friendly songs on there. "So Far, So Pleased", "Baby Knows", "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do", and even "Man O War" could have been on the radio.
