Gonna use DEAR MR. MAN in class:) So my government teacher told us tuesday to bring a song that is politically charged on thursday and i immediatly (sp?) thought of DEAR MR. MAN (i also thought of AMERICA but i don't have that cd yet) and i was wondering if i made the right choice of choosing that song... Love God. Love Music. Love Life.

here are my picks: Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos-Public Enemy ("I got a letter from the government the other day.." Posin' a threat, you bet it's fuckin up the government..") Casualties Of War-Eric B. & Rakim (..."some'n like monopoly,a government scheme..." ..."Now i'm home on reserve and you can bet when they call, i'm goin AWOL. 'cause it ain't no way i'm goin' back to war when i don't know who or what i'm fightin' for...") Why Is That?-BDP ("I'm sorry....the government you have elected is inoperative.") Higher Level-KRS-ONE ("..you can watch t.v. and give up your life tryin' to be all you can be in the army not knowing your history, you'll either fight or die or come back home in misery..""...no politician can give you peace if you trust jesus why do you vote for a beast?...."

No no no, not 'Dear Mr Man'.
I have many problems with the lyrics of Dear Mr Man. The biggest problem is this: Listen, ain't no sense in voting
Same song with a different name Might not b in the back of the bus But it sho' feel just the same WHAT? You are a MULTIMILLIONAIRE. And you are telling people NOT TO VOTE? You are telling me that a vote for Barack Obama, whose election gave pride and hope to millions of Americans (and millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa, too) is the SAME as a vote for John McCain? Prince is a multi fucking millionaire, telling people that a vote for John McCain was the same as a vote for Barack Obama. Well, cool: but he's insulated from living with the consequences because he's been swimming in money since the age of 20. This is irresponsible, and it is wrong. Look at how people around the world actually like America again. Look at how America's actually LEADING the world again. And whatever your opinion on Obama's economic policy, and his healthcare policy, DO NOT TRY AND TELL ME THAT A VOTE FOR OBAMA WAS THE SAME AS A VOTE FOR McCAIN. It is a lie, produced by a millionaire who has no idea what the effect of his words are or the consequences of people listening to him. Actually, you want a political song?
Funkadelic. "If You Don't Like the Effect, Don't Produce the Cause." This is human, balanced, and a call to empower yourself to make a change. And someone should play this to Prince. Until he understands that the longer he tells people they're powerless, sitting in his first class seat, he's part of the problem he's whining about. You say you don't like where you're at (yeah)
You can make a change If you accept the blame Stay in control of your reactions, yes Will determine the effect Of any situation You have the power to negate Any ulcer-causing feeling That prohibits you to think A situation is just that: It has no special power To do you harm It's your reactions that count If you don't like the effect Don't produce the cause You say you don't like what your country's about Ain't you deep In your semi-first class seat You picket this and protest that And eat yourself fat Ain't you deep In your semi-first class seat If you don't like the effect Don't produce the cause You say you don't like what your country's about Ain't you deep In your semi-first class seat You picket this and protest that And eat yourself fat Ain't you deep In your semi-first class seat Spreading heavy funk since 2008: theheaviestfunkintheworld.wordpress.com

OK, OK, while I'm at it... Funkadelic were radical, sometimes.
"Biological Speculation." We're just a biological speculation
Sittin' here, vibratin' And we don't know what we're vibratin' about And the animal instinct in me Makes me wanna defend me It makes me want to live when it's time to die Y'all see my point? I don't mean to come on strong but I am concerned I believe in god Though I know that law and order must prevail Oh, if and when the laws of man Is not just, equal and fair Then the laws of nature will come and do her thing Oh, she does not think She just rectifies She comes and balances the book Y'all see my point? Y'all see my point? We're just a biological speculation Sittin' here, vibratin' And we don't know what we're vibratin' about And the animal instinct in me It makes me wanna defend me It makes me want to live when it's time to die Y'all see my point? Some of you, you might not be aware That some of us don't eat Some of you don't, you don't even care Oh, if and when the system Creates hunger and hate Then the laws of nature will come and do her thing Oh, yes, oh! She does not think She works by instinct Survival is her thing Do y'all see my point? Y'all see my point? It's like... peace and love is GREAT, and here's a kiss, but if we don't get paid within like, soon, we will let ourselves into the kitchen and help ourselves, OK? OK. 'Sign O The Times' though it's not all political, it has elements within that politicians should be forced to confront. It's still really as relevant as it was in 1987, and there's a bonus too, some of the class may have actually heard it.
Or better yet, Marvin Gaye 'What's Going On' obviously.

[Edited 4/8/10 1:34am] I think the point is for it to be a political song. And the person is a Prince fan so wants to use a Prince song. Doesn't mean you have to agree with the politics or that they make sense. In fact it'll probably make for a more interesting conversation to unravel and deconstruct the politics than to say "oh yeah, right on"

yuk!, there's a world of far better tracks than this on the subject both old and new - Stevie - Livin' for the city [as relevant to day as it was back then], would be my choice or anything by Rage against the machine!

Dear Mr. Man IS a protest song, but I'm not sure how political it is. It uses the language of political dissent, but only to direct the listener away from political engagement in favor of pursuing God's Kingdom. "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

The person that is writing this "open letter", is. Believe it or not, you have allot of people who live in the hood, that feel this way. Prince is not singing this as Prince, but as one of those people. Except that Prince has gone on record (in interviews, etc.) expressing the same sentiment on his own behalf. So in that context, the song is representative of his views. And in both cases--Prince himself, or as the narrator of the song--the views espoused in the song exploit political dissatisfaction to promote political disengagement and apathy, and religious utopianism and escapism.
