An epic song. I remember hunting down all of the domestic and import CD-Single and Maxi releases assuming that the mixes were different, but finding out only the titles had been changed. Oh, well... the remixes and bonus tracks are great.

In the UK, the single release was very different to the US version. Only 3 tracks long, the Single Edit is a different edit that features the first section of Prince's 'rap'. Also, the other remixes on here have different names to the US versions, and are edited down.

When we did get Gangster Glam, it ended up being on the Cream cd single and started half way through. A very strange time, but interesting, as you never really knew what you were going to end up with back then.

great song! nod despite it's age, like you said, it still comes hard
and it sounds so fresh. perhaps because it's uniquely prince in sound
and weirdness.

love everything about this from the vid to the mixes to the bsides and
the live performances.

yeah, those are great too. different song altogether but that "get off"
is a great track. imo it should have even been on the GB album.

Some of these "maxi" singles had some great tracks on them, 4 example "Sex"..on the Scandalous Sex Suite, great little track.

I love the way that some of Get Off's synth hook and other musical bits n' bobs bled through into Gett off.

It's a really interesting evolution from Get off, through Glamslam 91, bypassing + replacing Horny Pony and culminating in Gett off.

Yep. It's like a little trilogy of songs in itself. "Loveleft Loveright" is the best of the three, too.

nod

It's almost like a secret gem, as it never gets talked about. I love all 3 tracks.

I re tracked my Graffiti Bridge album on my itunes and turned it into a Prince only album. All the associated artists are relegated to a 'disc 2', along with the horrible title track.

In their place I put Get off, Lubricated Lady, Loveleft loveright, P's version of Love Machine, the George Clinton-less version of We Can Funk, extended Thieves in the Temple & soul Psychodelicde. It really works, it's now a dirty electro funk sounding album.

I did that once as well and overall, the album plays much better.

More realistically, I wish that NPG maxi had been released with the outtakes from it (Oobey Doop, Play, My Tree, etc.). It would have been like a secret album. Or something to pick up the slack for the disappointing sales on the parent album, GB.

but that may well be why it wasn't released in its full, double-length form. it would need to be sold like a maxi, but I'm sure he'd want to get paid as if it was a full-length album.

Has anyone mentioned all those tracks (Oobey Doop, Play, My Tree, etc.) use the same rhythm/beat (slowed/sped up).

anyone have a full list, i think they're called the Larrabee sessions? think it includes all the New Power Generation versions/mixes

Have you ever run across the bootleg called 30 Years of Unreleased Funk? I believe those songs, in order, are on one of those volumes. (I think there are two volumes, 2 or 3 disks each, but I forget.)

It's worth digging up. There's a very stripped down (early) version of "Computer Blue" that is super funky. There's just a bit less overdub on it, and it more raw. Pretty decent copies of the songs on there, a lot of which had never been out before.

I guess I'll be the voice of dissent and say that I never cared for "Gett Off." For me it epitomised the worst of Prince in the '90s when he was chasing trends. I also was really disappointed with most of the maxi singles. Instead of getting great new songs you got multiple remixes of the same song. I'll take an original over a remix every time. Doing all of those remixes it just seemed like Prince was being trendy.

I didn't think it was that bad for new songs really.

On Gett off you had Violet the Organ Grinder.
On Cream you got Horny Pony (or at least you did in the UK)
On Money Don't Matter, you got Call the Law.

Yeah, there were a lot of remixes along with them, but 3 out of the 4 major singles had b/sides. It was after D&P that these all but dried up. Crying shame...

Well I guess that's kind of true but in the U.S. the two major singles were "Cream" and "Gett Off" and they both featured multiple remixes. It's true that you could find the odd original b-side but you really had to hunt for it. I know that "Violet the Organ Grinder" had new lyrics but musically it's a regurgitation of "Gett Off." My rule of thumb is whenever I see an asterisk with remixed by _____ I think of the song as lesser than an original b-side.

I loved the whole Gett Off project - maxi single and videos.
Gett Off House-style is still one of my favourite jams - the video is cool and love Rosie's singing the last few minutes. Also 'Clockin the Jizz' is cool but not fussed on the 'Gangsta Glam' vid with P on skates and in the pool with his braces and trunks!

The Gangsta Glam video is coming back to me even more now....it was wrong in a lot of ways - as well as Prince in his trunks and braces there was Tony M in his trunks, P and the Game Boyz dancing on skates with knee pads on and then there was Prince standing behind a girl lifting and squeezing her tits! Power to the people of MPLS!
