Isn't that Shelia??

That's what :I:'ve been led 2 believe! ah well, Prince is a functional Drummer i.e. he can play 4 a session and he can cut it Live too but he ain't a specialist Drummer.

Then again, what does a multi-instrumentalist specialise in? :I: am still trying 2 find an answer 2 that same question!

'dre

Yeah, I think it is. Wasn't it listed in the 12" credits? I think it's sheila on Bobby Z's super cool electronic and acoustic set.

I think that was Shiela, who I think also played drums on Crystal Ball/Expert Lover.

According to the Crystal Ball liner notes, Prince played everything on that song.

Can somebody name some more tracks Prince plays drums on.

He played on Sexual Suicide right?

Not so long ago I acquired a Prince drum solo track that was live from the early nineties I think. Labelled something like BlackMF, maybe it's doing the rounds and someone can tell me when it's from.

Anyway, it's very funky, with lots of kick drum action going on, but there are errors and overall it feels a little show-offish, like he's trying too hard in places. He doesn't sound like the sort of guy u would want drumming for your band for the whole set. Not like a ?uestlove of someone really tight, a groove drummer.

Prince would be great to have on the skins if u were having an spontaneous allstar sweaty funk jam in a club after a show. He has a lot of fun I think.

No Sheila E. played on "sexual suicide" .

Well, according to my Crystal Ball insert it says:

"After Sheila E. SHOWED Prince this drum beat - HE SNATCHED THE STICKS AND PUSHED RECORD IN HIS WAREHOUSE RECORDING STUDIO"

I'll go with the official insert on this one.

DIAMONDGEEZA

John Blackwell is the best if TRC is any indication of drumming talent.

He isn't the greatest but I LOVE when Prince plays real drums on his own music.

Phunk

Like Miles Davis once said:

"Prince is one of the greatest drummers I have ever worked with."

This is no joke. Miles did say that. I think I saw it on one of the British station specials on Prince.
And if the's one of the best for Miles, he's one of the best period.

Whatever it is, it´s got to be PHUNKy!!!

I didn't remember the exact quote, but you're right. Even before Miles threw that out there onto the table it was always obvious to me that Prince is way above average as a drummer.

All this stuff about who he's greater than or not greater than is neither here nor there, really. It's about having your own discernable, creative voice on an instrument, and he has that.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
