Yes, Really. It's all about his Music and Showmanship not his Sexual Acts. This is just Very Personal Stuff that is simply his Business and why should it be an Issue or even Up for Discussion? Why on Earth would it Influence Anybody's Admiration or Adoration of Him? It really Shouldn't and True Fans wouldn't even Dwell or even be Bothered with such Trivial small Minded Nonsense. Prince is so Above that kind of stuff that simply brings him down and it Shouldn't be a Consideration. It is Simply Another piece of Garbage Gossip from say Rag Papers and we all Know where they Dwell. People who aren't Fans just Don't Understand Prince and really I don't think they ever will. Hey , us fans don't understand Everything either, but I do think I do Understand what his Motives are. Frustrating as they may be. he does things His Way even if one wouldn't agree with it. It is his Vision. I think he has done Wonderfully post Warner Brothers and I really Dig his Musical Direction.

The music is the essence but I also come for the image as well...I actually dig it..Theres a lot of people who can do what Prince does..but they cant do what Prince does and "look" like he does. Same with Mick Jagger. They just LOOK trippy which adds to the music. "Climb in my fur."

If Prince was gay his image is cliche. It's the fact that he IS a straight man who perms his hear, wears silk and lace, high heels, etc. AND still sings about pussy that makes his image the least bit interesting.
He'd rather put on what another man wouldn't dare, but still let a man be a man... that's what makes his image interesting and intriguing. Otherwise he'd be just another drag queen a la Boy George, utterly predictible and boring Image wise of course. At the end of the day the music rocks regardless. but image wise is what I'm speakin. EDIT: Clarified we talkin about image not music here. . Rd I'm not contradicting anything. It IS about the MUSIC!! I cannot Help It if I want His Body Also so my Love or Lust for Him just well I can't help it if he gets me Hot cause he's Gorgeous and Hot and Sexy. How can one Discount this Fact? How can one Hide there Inner Fire? I will ALWAYS Yearn for Him. But ,I do Know it is about the Music. O.K.?

How would his image be cliched? I don't know of any other Gay men or Gay male artists that dress like he does. NuPwrSoul said: Otherwise he'd be just another drag queen a la Boy George, utterly predictible and boring Image wise of course.
Boy George is not a drag queen. I don't even know why this topic keeps popping up, we all know Prince likes pussy, he's just very androgynous. If people think he's Gay because he dresses as he does, then that says more about societies grossly mis-informed pre-conceptions about Gay men than it does about anything else. The Black community especially has been historically intollerant of Gay men, which is quite bizarre considering they have faced similar pre-conceptions and injustices throughout history as Gay men and women have, only Black people obviously faced greater injustice with slavery and yadda, yadda, yadda. Maybe it comes from the entrenchment of orthodox Christian religious beliefs that run through the Black community. Prince as a Black artist has obviously come under the scope of this homophobia simply due to how he dresses - that's pretty ridiculous. --------------------

Prince created his clothing and dress style by combining the public images of two black artists:
Jimi Hendrix, who is straight. Little Richard, who is gay.

How would his image be cliched? I don't know of any other Gay men or Gay male artists that dress like he does. Okay I probably overstated my basic point which is that P's mode of dress coming from a straight man was a bit of a novelty. This is oftmentioned by all the early critics from way back, and many of his audience/fans. He's one of the few (if not the only) straight men who could get away wearing what he did and still get the drawers. The Black community especially has been historically intollerant of Gay men, which is quite bizarre considering they have faced similar pre-conceptions and injustices throughout history as Gay men and women have, only Black people obviously faced greater injustice with slavery and yadda, yadda, yadda.
Black people are no more or less homophobic than the gay community is racist. Yes there is a public effort to promote a hypermachismo, in part due to the emasculation of black men under white supremacy which viewed black men/phallus as a threat (the whole lynching culture where white men felt threated by black men's manhood and penises would be taken home as trophies, etc.). However, there has always been a space within black culture where folks have always KNOWN and accepted gay men/culture. In music, even in church (the choir director), in fashion, in beauty shops, etc. These may be frought with stereotypes (and they are), but nonetheless, there has always been a space. Even many in the white gay community have recognized these cultural sanctuaries, hence the borrowing and setting up shop in many black cultural spaces wihtout much bother (house music, voguing, etc.) Maybe it comes from the entrenchment of orthodox Christian religious beliefs that run through the Black community.
Not so much that as it is the community's public defense against the assaults on black men. (see above) I probably didn't do this justice cuz I am short on time, but I figured I'd at least give a partial response. Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks etc. "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

There are gay people in the community but, they are usually on the down low. Keep in mind that black woman are right behind gay men when it comes to aids cases.
