It's Roger Limb, another english electronic composerfrom the same era and for some reason it ended up being credited to Delia on the bootleg that "revealed" it to us. And the CD Prince used was a sounds-databank CD anyone could purchase and use without paying additionnal fees or having to credit anyone. It's possible that Limb wasn't even credited on this CD for all we know. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

This kind of weird but clever experimental things is EXACTLY what I'd love Prince to do next!!! Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

We discussed this topic to death when that "WOW" bootleg came out, as it had the track on it - wrongly labelled as being by Delia Derbyshire. |

As for "Ambient Loop", i kinda like it in a weird way. It reminds me of being up at some stupid time in the morning registering for the site and watching it load for the first time and wondering what was there.
Ahhhhh good times. |

Thanks databank and Disciple for the info.
I seem to have missed that discussion. I remember from the HQ days that someone posted the 'discovery' and linked to a place where you could grab the file (long before it was included on Wow!) and it was credited to Derbyshire. Not into incidental music, so I knew nothing about Derbyshire or Limb. Regarding Prince's use of it, even if it's 'available-for-whomever' music I think we're not discussing birds chirping or water rushing from some 'sound efects' cd. It's a piece of music and I think Prince -who's always boasting about his originality and anal about credits- shouldn't have used it for the intro of a song and album.

Its an ambient noise and effects, used to support some poetry - it was licenced for use in other peoplems compositions.....what the hell is the problem? Musicians use a massive resource for sounds - why should sounds other people have created be precluded? that's ludicrous. should we extend the logic and say "hey, you didn't invent the piano, so you can't use it's sounds!" Its just as crazy as your suggestion. Did Prince use this supposed music as a melody? Did he base the song Eye Know around the piece? No! After the poetry intro, ita an entirely original and inventive song. So, what is your problem? Why on earth would you get your knickers in such a twist about this? ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Ahhhhh good times. I'm just glad someone else knows how to spell "ambient". I was the best speller in my primary school. Sadly we in the UK don't have any sort of spelling bee competitions like you guys, so I had no opportunity to kick any ass. |

The sound is from the Motif keyboard/rack. I have the rack and was going through sounds one day and came across it... no alterations at all... someone just pressed one key for a long time and there you have it....

Well, if you weren't going to contribute with an answer to what I was asking, I wonder why you didn't save everybody your empty dissent. You mean there was a question in all that? Silly me, how did I miss that? Perhaps, because there isn't one? Unless you'd like to point it out? All you've done is make senseless statements regarding the use of a stock sound - one that didn't require crediting, despite your insistance and you didn't even credit it to the right person anyway. You do know that SOTT (single) was made using stock sounds? (not someone playing a stock sound from a keyboard like Eye No, but still straight preset sounds from the synth - which is, in effect, the same thing). Are you going to lambast that for supposed "unoriginality"? Start talking sense and you may get the answers you are looking for. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I think we have a winner. It's NOT a Prince composition. No - its a sound on a keyboard. And a sound on a keyboard is not a compostion. A composition is an arrangement of sounds in a musical order. So, what's your point? ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

You know, there are some sounds (prob about 25%) in the music I produce that I didn't invent!! Shock horror - is this something I should be concerned about?! Are Prince and I in some abominable league - the one that flouts those written laws that state that music shall only be made with entirely original sounds of your own making?
