Suggest an album concept

So, he did Lotu$£low3r. Concept seemed good, but the end result, for many was at best a mixed bag. If you could control Prince's output for his next concept album, what would you like to see? I know, it's a moot point, but I'm just bored of talking about lawsuits and websites.

I'd like him to release a 4 album set. Inexpensive, like Lotusflower was and promote it like crazy. It'd be called Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue... You've guessed what's coming next.

Something Old

12 Selected tracks from the vault. Cream of the crop stuff, all killer, no filler.

Something New

12 new tracks. Good stuff, back to basics stuff. A chance for him to prove us wrong and come up with a killer 12 track album

Something Borrowed

12 cover songs of people he admires. Maybe even collaborate with the original artists. A Prince/Joni collaboration would be wonderful as long as the egos were left at the door.

Someting Blue

Just a bit of fun to fit the theme. Prince does bluesy covers of some of his hits/classic songs, maybe with a couple of new tracks thrown in.

Never gonna happen, I know. But we can dream. What would you like to see if you were in charge of his output? And please don't just put 'A decent album', because let's face it, we're all hoping for that! razz

Interesting.
And I know he can do it, but just won't.

He has recorded a few covers in the past but I think a whole album of remade songs that inspire him might produce some good results.

Lord knows he usually goes crazy with making the arrangements his own too.

He's not "above" a covers album either... happens in jazz all the time.

Something that doesn't suck, has live drums, is inspired from the deepest parts of his imagination and soul, and brilliant to the point that it'd set all of us on our asses for a decade.

Just sayin'...

I've come to realise that my favourite Prince albums of all time usually have live drums.

Dirty Mind II

Haven't got it all worked out yet, but side 2 track 3 would be 'Brother'

The question is: what hasn't P done that would spark the imagination and or creative mind? It isn't necessarily a style of music or genre. It would be in the lyrics, not the music, right?

True. Maybe the "collaborating" that people always suggest should be a lyricist

Great idea! So you're gonna stay "married" to Prince. wink

What do you mean by all killer and no filler? Lots of hectic rock guitar and no laid back funky jamming? If so I'd prefer the filler. Like a lot of the new youtube tracks, there are so many funky parts of different songs, not killer but I'm able to listen tot them continuously coz they just kind of get stuck in a groove that's brilliant in repetition.

Something new: What for Prince would be new when he's covered so many genres. What genre should it be, these new tracks. Should they fit a concept like Lotus and if so lets think up some ideas of NEW concepts for NEW songs. Not easy, I'm already stuck.

Cover songs are a good idea, I liked Crimson & Clover. But I don't know if I'd really listen to a full cover cd coz would it be really Prince? And to do covers to everyone's liking, I think that's mission impossible.

Love the Blue idea and the Old.

I have two ideas. Maybe he could call back all the past people he's worked with, bands like the Revolution, The Time, solo artists etc and make one song with each. He can called it ....hmm I don't know. It would be interesting to see what they come up with.

As for an entirely new concept album idea, I'd like something political and global, that tackles the world as it is today. War, oil, Global economy, water, climate change, energy, evolution communication those kinds of things.

A lot of people would probably find it boring, but I'd love an album of all instrumentals (not strictly jazz, something with a bit more of a classical influence). A full album of songs on the same vein as "Venus de Milo" and "Alexa de Paris".

I could paint to that for days and days. cloud9

Prince composes music to the lyrics of Tom Waits, and uses Tom's style of instrumentation--an out of tune piano, crappy drums, at least one home made instrument, jangly old guitar, marimba, a quavering violin, accordion, megaphone...

A Sign o the Times for the modern day, but a whole album? hmm... As long as it didn't end up being like Animal Kingdom, it could be good smile

I'd just like him to focus on the writing of the songs for several months before attempting to record any of them. Make sure the chorus isn't rushed or lazy, make sure the lyrics aren't cliche.

Focus on melodies that are not one or two notes, don't give the chorus the same melody as the verse. Don't add some cheesy bridge, and if you do, remove it during one of the later drafts of the song lol

Let them marinate for a while and then record them.
