He wasn't, really.

His first album didn't sell and chart that well, especially not when compared to its production costs and all that. Furthermore, he didn't give concerts yet, because he didn't have a proper band and because the one's he played with were not yet tight and perfect enough for a tour.

-----
Owen said the first contract was in the six figures so he was close to being a millionaire

That's not how record deals work.

That initial contract was the budget for the first three albums, not how much money was given to Prince. You have to recoup the budget the label gives you in record sales before you make any money from them.

Reminds me of the hood near us, full of rotting state houses, shops selling RTDs and cheap ass boose, butchers with povi masima and lamb flaps (Low quality cuts of meat bought by the poor). Loan shark shops everywhere, dodgy gambling parlours, tinnie houses (Our version of crack houses selling dope and other drugs (Not crack though) p), ethnic foodstores, dairies selling cheap unpasteurised milk and $1 loaves of bad bread (And even smokes for $1 each). Full of school dropouts, beneficiaries and criminals and mostly Pacific and Maori people, a thriving rap scene, gangs heaps of tagging (Grafitti) and fish and chip, KFC, McDonalds etc and their imitators (Lots of fried chicken joints), only one hospital and unsafe at night. Wheres this hood, not Compton or Watts but Manukau city in South Auckland, New Zealand.

And I think Prince's housing in PR was more solid working class like Mt Wellington or Mt Roskill rather than these ghetto ass suburbs.

Sheesh all that in that area???!!! Wow! Kind of reminds me of QueenBridge, NY.
Yeah, I guess compare to other houses, the house in PR was okay, but IDK, it still look kind of shoddy, like lower-middle house.

nod You mean the 'Queensbridge Projects', situated very close to Long Island City, Queens, NY. Damn, I've heard for years, how bad it is over there.

Whatever, some portion of the contract went into Owen and P;s pockets. They went to S.F to work on the record and rented a place to stay and they must have had to have pocket money.

I also stated that Ebony listed him as a millionaire in 81. The point is P had a nice chunk of change in his pocket when he was 18.

Not true. Artists get advances in those deals.

I doubt Prince's advance was $1 million but it was certainly substantial. Don't forget, there was a bidding war for him.

I know that - I'm signed to Universal myself, and was signed to EMI before that, and Sony BMG before that.

There's no way that Prince's initial advance was anywhere near a million dollars.

Regardless, you end up paying more in the long run for your advance. They're non-refundable but the label recoups them from the artists share of the royalties, even though they are already taking the lions share of them anyway.

Laura, WB paid the studio costs and rent for the recording of the first album in Sausalito. They may or may not have given Prince daily living budgets too, but again, they would have recouped all of this from his royalty share anyway.

Well, "poor" is kinda relative. His "poor" may be considered "rich" to really destitute people. Plus, I remember reading in one of Per Nilsen's books that Prince's father worked at an electronics store or factory, and that his family was middle class. Andre's mother may have had a harder time since she had more children to care for. From what I've seen/read, I wouldn't call any of them "poor," but that's just my opinion.

His dad worked for Honeywell as a plastics molder.

I suspect that most of Prince's "poorness" stemmed from the fact that he ran away from home at 12.

Honeywell PLASTICS. My mistake, I thought it was electronics. lol

What is your point? He still received some advance irreguardless of WB recouping it later. He was 18 with money in pocket not a million but he was not poor anymore.

Honeywell makes/made all kinds of stuff. At the time, they were best known for things like thermostats, air filters, humidifiers, etc. All of which require plastic parts and electronics. shrug

Prince had modest/humble beginnings but he was never dirt poor or anything. Never on public aid or anything. You can live in the hood and not be of the hood so to speak. And sometimes...just sometimes...those so called poor neighborhoods are not as poor as you might think.

Right. So his specialty was plastic molding for the products, but the company sold electronic items. Cool. nod I'm sure he earned a nice salary doing that.
