Comparrison of The Prince Music Eras ... I was just thinking how a few members I enjoy reading responses about P's music have made various points about how P's music has changed. Let's think back to the 1st 10yrs and the 2nd 10yrs and now the 3rd 10yrs.
What has changed the most about "the music" and "the sound" not just the lyrics but what would you say was the major change or what defining moment where you noticed the change in direction, with the music (not necessarily the lyrics)? Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

When D'angelo made Voodoo and he got criticized os to speak in its liner notes. It seemed to wake him up fomr being just a fat cat resting on his laurels to make him actually focus on the musician-ship and further hone his skills imo. Since then he has upped the ante on his perfomrances and technical aspects of his band/his playing. | |

1978-1984: The Minneapolis Sound years
heavy synth, heavy new waves influences, full definition of a whole musical genre. Starts with "For You" until the "Live" video. 1985-1991: Exploring new grounds Jazz influences from Eric & Sheila, Pop/rock influences from Wendy & Lisa, inclusion of strings and horns into Prince's music and more sophistication. Starts with "Around The Worls In A Day" until Eric Leeds' "Times Squared". 1991-1996: More sophistication and full recognition of R&B heritage Hip-hop becomes a major influence, horn arrangements get more complex, and back to rock & roll & R&B basics. Starts with "Diamonds And Pearls" until "The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale". 1996-2001: The so-called "plastic" years Strong R&B influences, lotsa drum programming in a "Kirky J." way, even more sophisticated arrangements. Starts with "Emancipation" until "The Chocolate Invasion/The Slaughterhouse". 2001-2003: The jazz years Very short era but quite distinct from the others: jazz-funk, no more drum-programming, even more complex arrangements, lotsa instrumental stuff. Starts with "The Rainbow Children" and ends with "N.E.W.S." 2004-now: The homage years Both homage to R&B roots and Prince's 80's sound, no real evolution but more a re-exploration of what's been done before. Starts with "Musicology" and might or might not end with "Lotusflow3r/Elixer/MPLSound" . This is of course debatable, there is no clear line between "eras", but i think this kinda makes sense ^^
