Article: A Long Convo with Janelle Monae (Prince Mention)

It's a long article, so I posted only a short portion of it with a Prince mention. She's an interesting artist, and I love the fact that she's not manufactured, so-to-speak. To read more, click on link. The same interview can also be found on her myspace page in her blog at http://www.myspace.com/janellemonae

A Long Convo With… Janelle Monáe
Tuesday May 11, 2010 – By Clutch
Source: http://clutchmagonline.co...lle-monae/

(Interview conducted by Keith Murphy @ Vibe)

.....VIBE: "What was the most memorable aspect of recording The ArchAndroid?"

Janelle Monáe: We traveled to Prague and to Turkey… I had a lot of the songs come to me in my dreams. I had my recorder next to me in my bed and I was able to record everything that I could make of the dreams, thank God. We dealt with the music first. I write music for the people because I come from a working family. My mom was a janitor and my father drove trash trucks, and my stepfather actually works at the post office. I’m very connected to that society. That’s where my uniform comes from…I’m paying homage to that working class who turns nothing into something.

How does a song like “Tightrope” play into your homage to the working class?

So many people deal with so many obstacles everyday that they need to relieve some of that stress. So “Tightrope” deals with balance and not getting too high or too low. So I just really focused on creating art, songs that I felt would connect to people. I let all my fear go on whether people were going to like it or not.

VIBE: It seems you’ve gained some famous fans. Can you talk about the experience of hanging out with Prince at his Paisley Park studio?

Janelle:
He is definitely a huge supporter of what I do. I shared with him The ArchAndroid and he loved it. He has given me lots of advice. He is even encouraging everybody to go and get ArchAndroid because he was moved and touched by it. It’s very inspiring just to watch him. I heard his new album and its really going to be great."

In the meantime, check out her "Tightrope" video, and the other
video explaining her new album "ArchAndroid" It's clear to see who her influences are. She's JB, Prince, MJ, David Byrnes, Annie Lennox, and Grace Jones all rolled up in one package.
Now is she awesome or what?

On another note,
You can see where Janelle gets some of her dance steps influence (in Tightrope video)when you watch this 1960s video of JB's performance in NYC. At mark 2:25 and mark 5:50 in JB's vids.

Janelle giving a take on her new album "ArchAndroid".

This was her "Many Moons" video from a former album, nice performance, you could see why Prince appreciates her creative music skills.

Update: A clip of Janelle Monae's debut on David Letterman's show on 5/18/10:

I had no problem linking to it. I remember orgers questioning Janelle's response when she tweeted about listening to some new music of Prince's, when she and her band visited Paisley, and she said after listening to it, they "fell on the floor", so-to-speak. Some orgers here, didn't know what she meant by that comment, and thought she meant something negative, when in fact, if you read her comment in the "Clutch magazine" article, she pretty much clarifies that previous tweet comment, by saying something positive about a new Prince album she obviously listened to, when she recently visited Paisley Park a few weeks ago in April. Quite frankly, in that interview, it pretty much sounds like , but doesn't confirmed that a new Prince album is in the works. Interesting, don't you think? biggrin

Just to note, I'm not saying she is actually confirming a new album, just stated above that it sounded like it in her interview, but I'll wait until we hear it from a credible source, since there's all kinds of rumors about it circling here, with no confirmation.

Sure sounds like it, but since there's been no confirmation from the real source, and I'm not talking about this site as a real source, we can't say for sure, since there's been so many rumors, and that's all it is rumors. Guess we'll have to wait and see. In any case, it's an interesting interview, and nice to know she's gaining more fans. I remember reading she wrote some of the songs for the movie "Idlewild." I like artists that takes risks, and Janelle is one of them. Nice to know Prince enjoys her music, as she stated in that interview.

I just clicked onto it with no problem. That article was linked to the ebonyjet.com site at http://www.ebonyjet.com/

The Janelle interview is listed at the far right bottom of the ebony site. I had no problem linking to it. I remember orgers questioning Janelle's response when she tweeted about listening to some new music of Prince's, when she and her band visited Paisley, and she said after listening to it, they "fell on the floor", so-to-speak. I mean, lawd have mercy, amazing what good news you can come across on a site, when you're looking for something entirely different, but sheesh, I'm not complaining, just sayin'..ya know..lol
[Edited 5/11/10 20:49pm]

I actually found it quite...incredible that her tweet was taken the way it was by quite a few here. That was the day I realized that the org had jumped the shark.

I now just lurk to see if any pertinent news comes up. Like this. I am now going to itunes to preorder her new cd.

Totally agree, there is a tin line between a fanatic and a hater, some orgers went to the dark side.

Thanks again 2Elijah, you are the best cool
I dig the Tightrope song I wanna hear more stuff on youtube before I buy though.

I can't scan etc but in the recent issue of the Dutch "Jazzism" (a big focus on the North Sea Jazz festival where also Larry Graham, Al Green and many others are playing) there is also a mention of Prince on page 16.

The page is about Ana Moura. It explains how Prince saw her in concert in Paris, her visit to MPLS and she says quote " he seemed to know all my records and played my songs for me on the piano. It was great! But more I can not say at this moment in time." biggrin Hint hint!

I wonder if they recorded something together for the new album! Now he must also get to hear Ceu from Brazil. Or maybe he has already. A friend of mine gave me one of her cds, a blend of samba, jazz and soul.

I've heard of Janelle, sometime back in 2005, long before the movie "Idlewild" came out. My son filmed an interview that she did with one of his friends sometime in 2008. Interesting artist. We need more like her these days with originality, even if you could see through her performances, who some of her influences are.

I saw her for the first time at a Grammy event 2 years ago. I was there taking some pictures that she was the last to perform. She started jumping on tables and dancing all over the place and I was blown away. I went out and bought her album that day. I will post a couple of pix as soon as I learn how to do it.

Thanks, that would be nice. I had her on my myspace page since 2006, and used to listen to some of her music, and thought, "How different". Good to see an artist that is not your manufactured type, plus it was my son who first told me about her. His friend interviewed her in 2008, while my son filmed it.

If you look at the footage in the "Tightrope" video. She has a bit of James Brown going on in her dancing, and you can compare that to James Brown's "Out of Sight/Night Train" video from the 60s. Starting from the 2:25 mark in the video, watch his dancers to the left and on the 5:50 mark, when James has one knee up gliding across the stage, just like how Janelle does that when she jumps off the table and dances through her dancers with one knee up in a scene from the vid "Tightrope". Now doesn't that part remind you of some of the steps Janelle and her dancers are doing in a part of the "Tightrope" video? A lot of James Brown influence there for sure.

Yes, she's an awesome artist. I posted her "Tightrope" vid on the first page, and also where she talks about her new album "ArchAndroid", if you want to view it. Love that "Tightrope" track and video. During a past interview she said her fanbase increased through myspace, at the time she was working with Big Boi and the Outkast family, and it took off from there.
