Once you get to the level of playing that Prince and his all his current/former bandmembers are at, it becomes very subjective about who is 'better' or 'worse'. He's always hired the best of the best.

So personally speaking, I'd argue that Prince was better than just about all of The Revolution, with the exception of perhaps Dr. Fink. Since then, I'd argue that his band members have been slightly better than him on their respective instruments, with the exception of his guitarists (only because Prince himself is a 'total mother' on that instrument, where as I'd rate him as only 'very good' on the others).

Again, it's all very subjective. Prince may not have the chops of some of his players, but he definitely has his own unique spin on all the instruments he plays.

So Prince can't find any bass players that are better than him to be in his band? Levi's the only one that is better than him?

Imagine Prince playing with Marcus Miller excited

Prince is a stellar guitarist but a fair bassist.
I think all of his bassists have been technically superior.

Then you obviously haven't really seen Prince play the bass.

Er.. that solo was played by Prince, afaik.

It was recorded December 9, 1986. As far as I can tell, it was a solo outing with him only, recorded at his home studio after the Hit N Run Tour ended in September 1986 in Japan. He also worked on Sheila's 3rd album, and a track with Tony LeMans through this period.

Yeah it was hard to tell. I figured someone would pop up w/ more information. It does sound "live" in some way. Prince, even back then, couldn't quite play like that on drums.

I didn't know Wendy played bass guitar
I knew she played some exotic instruments-percussion

Who do you think is playing all the extra instruments on the Wendy & Lisa albums? She also plays drums. Check the liner credits on the first album.

nod

I'm hardly putting her among P's top bass players, but Wendy's playing on "Happy Birthday," the B-Side of "Are You My Baby," is over 20 years old now, and the vampy intro is still one of the sickest recorded bass performances I think I've heard from a Prince-related act.

I'm sorry but we're supposed to be on the online Prince fan community and "fans" of Prince don't even make the the difference (with their ears) between Prince & Levi style on bass.

You all can say whatever you want but this bass solo on "2 Nigs" he's not played by Prince...

If you think otherwise (it's your right) but then I invite you to listen to Levi solos on the Bass during this period ....
Prince has never ever ever played bass in this way (If it gives you chills to think otherwise good for you)... but his style of playing has nothing to do with what we hear on "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton".

Periode.

No? I advise you to give the Madhouse "8" album a spin then. The man has bass chops to spare when the style of music calls for it. I've seen him play this way live too btw.
