Have fun reading it, but beware... He thinks the one word-titled songs from 1993 were Prince's weakest material ever, so you obviously can't trust everything in that book. wink

I actually remember this. I read it in Rolling Stone Magazine. A tiny little blurb with a pic of Wendy and Lisa holding bottles of bubbles and blowing them into the air. The caption: Wendy and Lisa bid adieu to Prince. Something like that. I was shocked.

Yeah, I'm taking it all with a grain of salt. Matt Fink told me about how he said things to Hahn, and both agreed it was "off the record", but Hahn used his quotes anyway, totally disregarding the "off the record" moment(s). I remember the title alone getting fams in a stitch, but as the old saying goes...let's not judge a book by the cover.

I hope I can plow through this in the two weeks I'll have it. I might have to scan the rest and read it on my own time.

Quit you say? Never heard that before. Details???
Supposedly upset with Prince's expansion of the Revolution, his womanizing ways and arguments with Susannah which created a conflict of interest with the girls cuz they were sisters (at least Wendy and Susannah), but also band members, plus Prince's controling nature (i.e. Prince yelling at Wendy for drinking a beer backstage before the concert in Sheridan, WY for the UTCM premiere) they decided they were going 2 quit. They were on the way 2 the airport when Prince summond Alan Leeds 2 intercept and ask them 2 stay 4 at least the European tour. Brownmark was also offered more money 2 play bass with Stevie Nicks but he 2 was convinced 2 stay on 4 the Parade European tour.

Read above. The stories of Mark, Wendy and Lisa wanting to leave aren't any secret. They quit before all that. W&L were at the airport leaving, and Bobby was sent by Prince to talk them back. Mark was leaving and Prince promised him "a lot of money" to be made on the tour. Mark turned down touring with Stevie Nicks. Prince only paid Mark around $3000 a week. That's an extremely paltry sum compared to what a band member, or a touring musician, would make normally on a tour, especially in a band as popular and big as The Revolution was at the time. He stood to make 2 or 3 times that much if he toured with Nicks instead. Prince lied, and he left anyway. Also, W&L were reported to not have enjoyed the expanded version of The Revolution, especially the inclusion of Jerome, Wally, and Greg as comic foils.

So in short, Prince pulled them all back for the tour, then it all ended a year later.

It's not really surprising though, that Prince wanted to keep the band in tact at least through 1986. Remember he told Dez back in 1982, "I need you for a 3 year commitment. If you don't want to stick around for that, I understand." Basically telling Dez, either you're in for this period of time, or you can go now on your own. Dez obviously chose to leave. Prince knew that the movie would be a year, plus videos, then the tour would be the next year, and a quick follow up, then probably another tour (and another movie). He knew that would be a three year time frame, and to have band personnel change during that time would not be good for sales, publicity, or otherwise. He needed The Revolution, as a unit, to stay intact. Faces, and names were familiar immediately in 1984 with Purple Rain. It was all about momentum into 1985/1986. Once the Hit N Run tour was over, and the momentum died a little bit, that's when it was a good time for folks to REALLY jump ship. And that they did.
I had heard the stories of Prince wanting Mark to stay. I also believe that Wendy and Lisa may have had a "moment" of wanting to leave, but I don't believe for a minute that they walked away from that situation on their own for good. They did interviews for years after that bascially saying how pissed they were that he got rid of them. I also agree that there were way to many cooks in the kitchen on the Parade tour. You know Wendy had to be pissed Miko was standing right next to her on stage, admittedly or not!

Not just yelling at her but fining her, something he supposedly did alot with the band members including the Time.

I still cringe at some very cool rehearsal sessions and hearing Wally or Greg yelling "Come on Come on!!" or some other senseless comments These people most have been jamming with Prince since the beginning and like they need him to hype them up... they were done after SOTT too. Prince used to tear into them "joking" on a lot of the shows.
And BrownMark who was a front player since the Dirty Mind days after the 2nd song of the Parade tour being reserved to playing behind the 3 dancers. It looked funny at times seeing him move all over the stage like he was trying to get back up front. I'd still take him over Levi, BrownMark silently had more character then Levi

1988 biggrin

i'd been hearing prince songs on various places. a friend of mine
in school, when i was 7, used to play a tape of the 1999 album all
of the time at his house. his brother was a big prince fan.

i remember him putting on that tape and vinyls of other albums yet
i never liked any of it. whenever i'd go over to his house to play
with legos i'd think 'i hope he's not gonna make me sit through
that horrible prince music again'.

lol

little did i know then that those albums he played and i disliked,
would end up becoming some of my most cherished music of all time
about 5 year later.

I was 16 and a junior in high school and my first thought was "Who the hell is going to back him up?" and in a few months later I hear this song called Sign O The Times. I was like damn that was quick! Who's in the band?

Sheila E.-How did he pull this off, she was a great solo artist even though she was in Prince's pocket

Levi-Kinda like meh until I really heard him play. Really funky, but BrownMark was just as Funky

Miko-I knew from the Mountains video and the Cherry Moon premiere that Wendy was a done deal. Way more accomplished on the guitar.

Boni-Offered great vocals, but I would have much rathered seen Lisa. Her look would have worked well with the "peach and black" vision

Dr Fink-the Dr. is well the Dr. no complaint there until he wasn't around after the Nude tour. I was really like what the hell is Prince thinking.

Overall the SOTT/Lovesexy band is Prince's most musically strongest band, but as an image band with all the glam was the Revolution even with Dez and Andre.

I was in a state of not caring.

Much of the love give to The Revolution has been tied to the warm fuzziness of the movie Purple Rain. More than any other band, we felt that we "knew" The Revolution due to their screen time.

Fact of the matter is, they were a backing band very much in the same way Prince's other bands have been.

True ... I still love me some Wendy & Lisa tho ... "is the water warm enough". Want some company !?!?! LoL

I'm pretty certain I heard it announced on the radio in the UK.

I remember thinking it was probably a good thing - strip away the past and start again. I was sure, given the back catalogue of work already accumulated and what I had seen already that Prince would still deliver.

You don't seem to know much about Prince history or music,
besides the topic isn't about being in a box, because the band members he had from 1978-1986 NEVER put him in a box, actually between 1982-1986 the band member and those in his camp including Susannah were very much people who helped Prince stretch his wings in ways, creatively I don't think the the following bands could.
The SOTT band fit ^^ this too, BUT I don't believe that Sheila Cat Levi or Boni had the song writing chemistry Prince had with Wendy & Lisa

I will also say that you really see Prince expanding in creativity when Lisa joined prior 2 Dirty Mind

Believe it or not,I was in school lol It was my art class. The teacher was cool and allowed us to keep the radio on while doing our work.We were listening to the local R&B station (KSOL) and after playing "Girls And Boys",the DJ mentioned that there is no more Revolution.I wasn't totally surprised by this.In late 86,after the failure of UTCM,there was a sense that Prince was fading...a sense that he needed to "start over" and revitalize. He needed new inspiration.

Same here. mark Goodman on MTV-News (before they got Kurt Loder) made the announcement (they used to say the same reports all day lol). I was in my livign room watching empTV of course. I too was shocked and felt like "wtf?" It was weird because at the time I felt that though I yearned for 1999 solo type of stuff, I couldnt fathom how all of a sudden they were no longer together because they all seemed like a family. Or that we all (audience) came to love them as a fmaily.
