Then you weren't paying attention. It wasn't a medley driven tour for the sake of shoving a bunch of songs into the show. He was telling a story. Act I, he was the Camille character. Lust driven, after Cat's character. He started with "Erotic City", and ran through lusty songs like "Sister", "Jack U Off", "Dirty Mind", "Controversy", etc etc etc. He also played "Adore" twice. It was Camille battling between love and lust. In the end, he battles his woman in "Bob George", and eventually finds the light with "Anna Stesia". Watch Act II. You hear "Cross the line.....cross the line", telling people to make the step to goodness. His character, and the band, literally rise from under the stage as if being born from the earth itself. Flowers pop up around the stage. Even the lighting is more colorful than the first act, using more yellow, orange, red, and white, opposed to the blue and white of the first act. It's why he put songs like "The Cross" and "I Wish U Heaven" back to back. I don't think they worked back to back, but he was driving home a point. Remember, Prince went through a whole rebirth process during this time, with the Black Album, etc etc, and that whole story. The concert 100% reflected that. It was a big rock soap opera. THIS was the rock opera before the album showed up.

It seems that Prince's look during the concerts were not all that out there, photosets he wanted to be a bit more crazy with the makeup and all, but that didn't bother me at all
Looking at images from the concerts it seems he had on very little make up and the outfits he wore weren't outrageous at all. We usually see him in the pockadot suite, the black pants with Lovesexy on the sleave either shirtless or with a shirt-pockadot or ruffled or 'wife beater' I think people are making too much of it really because this era cant touch the outrageousness of the Gold/0-+>/Slave era people who say he was too androgenous or feminine during Lovesexy, get all wet over the Gold/Slave era. Which for me the look over all was just blah

Ah the old presumptuous & condescending argument;'the reason you don't like it is because you don't understand it'. I have no doubt you are correct and that was indeed the reason for the medleys. However there is also the faint possibility that I'm actually aware of this, and paying attention, and still thought it was shite. Believe it or not, that IS possible.

wrong try again .....Strangely enough I'd prefer to watch Prince play a guitar than shoot a basketball.
but just as long as it's funky and not this boring old fart rock shit he always sneaks in if I want to hear rock, then Ill go to a concert of... well, I don't want to hear rock The Compromise Theory:
Based on my analysis, I believe the government faked the plane crash and demolished the WTC North Tower with explosives. The South Tower, in a simultaneous but unrelated plot was brought down by actual terrorists. Is it a deal?

I love love love this era! For me, it is my favourite - pure Prince with a big dose of teenage,80's nostalgia thrown in for good measure. I recall arguing with guys I went to school with around this period who were convinced by these pics in the media that he was gay.....
I also kinda agree with someone elses comment that possibly thia concert/era appealed more to his European fan base than his US fanbase. Then again if we all like the same thing, wouldnt that be boring???

Not only my first Prince concert but my first concert ever!!! Very fond memories of that era. I remember "funny smelling" cigarettes being lit up around me at The Joe Louis Arena in Detroit and people on their feet for most of the show. I for some reason was fascinated with the fact that I saw his guitar tech handling his guitar with a towel wrapped around the body to make sure no fingerprints or smudges got on it! Loved the concert, love the album!!! "Boy is lonely on a burning hot summer night, he's looking for some action, he 's looking for a fight"

LOVESEXY
Looking at these photos makes me smile, Prince really was one WILD YOUNG MAN I couldn't hear or see any of this at the time, and it's probably good. Back then I might have made some type of judgment. Now I can totally embrace his voyage and the era he was diggin. I never heard Annastasia until I found my way to Paisley Park. I remember asking the guy next to me if this was something that Prince wrote I was then and still am so amazed!!! PRINCE rocks

In the fall of 88,I camped out to buy concert tickets.Remember back in the day (before the Internet) when fans would camp out somewhere to buy tix? That was so much fun! I arrived at 4:00 AM to a shopping mall. The ticket place (Ticketmaster?) was inside,so the security guards allowed us to come in and sit by it.
Someone with a boombox starts playing the Lovesexy cassette, and then he plays old favorites like "Let's Go Crazy",which really got us all happy and energized, lol. One interesting thing that I remember: the tickets were only $22.50! Yes,back in the day, concert tickets were not that expensive. These days, you can't find too many concert tickets for less than $100. Did any other orgers "camp out" to buy tickets to the Lovesexy show? I'd like to hear your experiences.

I camped out a few times: for SOTT outside the stadium in Utrecht. that was really great. people with guitars, singing togehter. I also camped out for Lovesexy and Pink Floyd a year later. somewehere in the early 1990's a friend of mine got a house near the ticket office (Ben NOZ for fellow Utrechters ) From that day we usually got ourselfs a 'number' in the virtual line and stayed the night in that friends house. Of course we brought the folks that where really in line some beer ans something to eat during the night. ahhhh I'm getting old.

I camped out for tickets to the 'Act 1' tour but it was a bad experience. The tickets sold out in just a few minutes and I didn't get one Prince was playing small theatres on this tour,so there weren't that many tickets available. I had to go to a ticket broker, pay three times as much, but at least I got to go

This is without question my favorite "era", i love(d) everything about it. It was when I started travelling all over the place just to see that show one more time.
To understand the different reactions on both sides of the ocean more, you just need to look at what music was popular at the time. The second half of the eighties was, in the US, all about bubblegum machismo type crap... Def Lepperd, Bon Jovi, many acts like that. Prince almost represented the direct opposite of what was working for the US audience at that time with his cheerful girly act. What was "gay" in the US then, we called "avant garde" in Europe, and he's never been bigger over here than he was back then. "this especially prepared potato is called pomme de terre"

ernestsewell said: StevenAnthony said: As a gay man, I can say that this would not have been effective marketing to "draw" me into Prince. This is my least favorite era, looks and music wise. I heard the live show was great, but I've yet to see/hear a boot that convinces me of that.
The majority has spoken on that. You'll either believe it for yourself, or not. But having seen the whole shindig first hand, it was one of Prince's biggest achievements in a live setting. It was more grand and exciting than the Purple Rain tour ever could have been. Watch "The Prince of Paisley Park" on VH1 classic sometime. It plays a lot, but I don't know who produced it. Anywho, it has a lot of Lovesexy era footage and you can plainly see he was at the top of his game during this time. I wish I was old enough to see it live back then. If you think he looked bad ass in Purple Rain (both tour and movie), then take a look at him on the Lovesexy tour. He was kicking ass and taking names. If anything, watch "Prince of Paisley Park" to see him sing "Happy Birthday" to Cat. It is playfully funky and just plain SICK. (In a good way.) I wish u heaven

Yeah man, I camped out several times. Lovesexy Live or 'Livesexy' made me do it. I didnt see that show live, but my brother recorded it from the radio and I was hooked from then on. I had a bunch of friends who were Prince geeks too and we camped out all night for tickets to the Nude Tour, Act II and Gold. For Act II we had to buy tickets in winter. It was FREEZING but we had a great time. Yeah, those were the days... - [Edited 4/12/10 10:27am]
