Prince vs. Jesse who is better on jazz guitar We often compare Prince and Jesse for their inspired rock lead guitar solos.
but what about their ventures into jazz guitar. On Verbal Penetration we have great "Ali vs. Frazier on which Jesse displays his Wes Montgomery influences. On the other side Prince played some tasty jazz guitar solos starting with 1985 Love Bizzare guitar solo, Mountains extended version and great jazz guitar on Get some Solo and some cuts on Xpectations.Prince's jazz licks are more in the vein of George Benson. So who plays jazz guitar better between these two guitar masters? p.s. Prince and Jesse are not jazz guitar players but they ventured into that genre so who did it with better results [Edited 3/21/10 7:41am] [Edited 3/21/10 7:41am]

None of the two can be deemed a jazz guitarist. So there's no comparison.

i'm not saying that They are jazz guitar players i'm only asking who plays jazz better Yes. I read that properly. It's the same if I ask "who's the better F1 driver, Julia Roberts or Oprah Winfrey. None of them is a F1 driver, but I keep on asking who's better as a F1 driver". If you want an answer anyway, I'd say that even if any of them is millions of miles away from being a jazz guitarist, Jesse would be closer than Prince. Prince just doesn't understand jazz phrasing. He thinks everything is rock. And the examples you give don't say anything. It's only that on A Love Bizarre, Mountains, My Summertime Thang pt2 or Xemplify (I think that's the one) he used different scales to his usual pentatonic diarrohea. [Edited 3/21/10 7:50am]

I'd say you haven't listened to much jazz, have you? But if you think the solo on She Spoke To Me (Ext) is played by Prince then it's plain to see you don't know what you're talking about. I never heard John L. Nelson play apart from the 4 tracks he recorded for his album and the bit he played at a Prince aftershow. So I can't say whether he was or not a proficient jazz improviser. I'd bet he wasn't anything to write home about. But even if he could play like Art Tatum or Oscar Peterson, on which planet should a son 'automatically inherit' his dad's chops? Does swing run in the blood? [Edited 3/21/10 15:20pm] [Edited 3/21/10 15:21pm] [Edited 3/21/10 15:22pm]
