New Prince songs that give you that old Prince feeling It rarely happens anymore. Most of the time when I hear a new Prince song, even if I generally like it, it's more of an unenthusiastic response like, "Yeah, it's not bad. Good song, I suppose." Then I play it a couple of more times before returning to Sign 'O' the Times yet again.
LotusFlow3r had a few songs though that reminded me why I love Prince; songs that had that old Prince charm. It had a few songs, even if just a few, that reminded me of that incomparable peculiarity and personality in Prince's best songs that make him so special to listen to. The songs $, Here, No More Candy 4 U, and Feel Good... all returned me to that feeling, and I'm grateful for it. None of the songs on 3121 or Planet Earth evoked such a response. Any songs from his last two-three albums give any of you that feeling? [Edited 1/26/10 18:36pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I don't think that Prince will ever give me the feeling that Lovesexy did, because my life/experience is so different now as from when I first heard that album. I am not the same person. Art/music hits me differently than it used to. I try not to qualify things in terms of "better than or less than". I mean, if you were a Prince fan waiting since 1984 for him to give you that Purple Rain feeling again, you had to wait a long time, because he never 100% went back to that sound. In fact, on Parade he seemed very far removed from it. Furthermore, the much of his older material has grown on/with me. I come to love it more, and hold a special place for it. Chalk it up to nostalgia or whatever. Does that have more to do with Prince (the artist) or me (the audience)? I am not sure. I think all of his music has had the Prince "feel" to it. Sure, he dips into different genres, but it is all very Prince to me. Songs like "No More Candy 4U" and "Dance 4 me" sound like they could have been on Prince albums from the 80's. They just don't hit me like they would have back in the day. Don't get me wrong, a lot of Prince's newer stuff gets me excited as I can be about music these days, it's just different experiencing any new music now than it was 10 or 20 years ago. You know what, the new Jesse Johnson album Verbal Penetration has that old Prince feeling, but nothing Prince has out out in the last couple of years really do it for me. | |

For instance, I watched Breakin' recently (for the first time in years) and it brought back so many good memories. I love that movie for that reason because Lord knows it ain't Citizen Kane. Prince's music was fantastic back in the 80's and the nastalgia factor makes it even more so. I'm not sure anything could ever hit me like that again. | |

You named 4 of their albums, How many Prince albums have you listened to in total? you can't ask the OP to name another artist who they still enjoys their new albums as much as their old, then when they answer, throw in a 'but they've not had as many albums as Prince! Talk about changing the goalposts! I personally think Radiohead is a good example. They've been around for a couple of decades and still release interesting, challenging music. Just because they only release an album every 3 or 4 years doesn't make them bad. I'd rather have a classic Prince album every 3 years than another collection of coasters to put my cup of tea on.

We all know Crystal Ball is the "album" that should have came out. To answer your question, I do not think any of P's music will take me back to when I 1st became a so called hardcore fan. I didn't become a fan of P's work until Emancipation Era (as I call it). So I missed the Purple Rain experience and the Under The Cherry Moon experience and the Graffiti Bridge experience. Emancipation was promoted pretty well. I'm thankful to have seen the Oprah interview and Good Morning America interview and the Jam of The Year Miami (show). I've been real cool about it. It wasn't until the 7.7.7 show and the 3121 Las Vegas shows did I get the teenager vibe of being hardcore about something, like music. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Wall of Berlin Boom These songs have brought the thrills, smiles and feeling of exhileration that all brilliant P songs do. I also wonder how immune we as fans are to Prince's many gifts. When I hear many other critically acclaimed artists I am so underwhelmed. How many other artists give you all the musicianship, diversity of styles, humor, quirky worldview, sex and perversity (in a good way) as only Prince can do? We have been so spoiled! | |

I never heard the unreleased track "Extra Loveable" until 1998. When I heard it, I immediately got the same exact feeling I got when I bought the "1999" album back in 1982. My life had gone through all kinds of changes since 1982 but that song gave me the same old feeling I used to have. . . . I hear you, but we both know you are old school. "Extra loveable" is straight up Prince 1983-ish. There is no way you were not gonna love it.That's an example of an old Prince song giving you that old Prince feeling. You knew it was from the early 80's going into it, right? "New Power slide...." |

To be honest; for me, none.
I can still enjoy his new stuff from time to time but I guess I outgrew fandom a long time ago. His music from 1983 - 1993 means the most to me, and that is basically the only stuff I still listen to and can still enjoy as much now, as I did back then. I still think Prince is a very talented and unique artist. And I hope I'll get the chance again to see him perform, for old times sake. But I don't get excited about his new music anymore, and that is perfectly fine since it is not set in stone anywhere that I have to be. | |
