Who elses wishes P would leave hiphop alone permanently?

I never got into any of his hiphop oriented stuff like Days of Wild and Now. I never liked the rappers he works with like Tony M and TC Ellis. I think funk rock and soul is his best niche. The hiphop seems forced and non authentic.

I like "Days of wild", "Now" and other more hiphpop oriented songs. But I agree, sometimes it sounds forced. I really hate it when he copies modern r&b, like "incense and candles" or "mr.goodnight".

He has left it alone for the last few years hasnt he? And please dont mention the porn rap in Mr. Goodnight as a recent example.

I dont, the love the stuff he does by himself like Days of wild and Incence and candles, but cant stand the stuff he did with Tony M. Who is the guy rapping on Daisy chain? the song is perfect until that guy starts.

what ludwig said. now and days of wild are great. it is the plastic r n' b stuff that sounds most fake...

and he says: "snakes alive" in now. that rocks!

Of course he shouldn't. It's a vibrant art form and he's an artist. I wish he could better incorporate his hip hop impulses into his overall sound, but his own sing-songy, JB style "rapped" lyrics are often cool. Pussy Control, I Wanna Melt With U

As for guest raps, it's just a matter of execution in terms of rapper and song. Would love to hear a top notch Mos Def, Black Thought, Wale, Common verse on a Prince song. Actually I'm surprised we haven't had an Andre3000 cameo yet.

If you have any love for hip hop (and not just the dime store cultural voyeurism kind), this kind of question seems a bit odd. Should he leave jazz alone permanently? Maybe he should stick to shorter guitar solos? His strength is in his musical breadth and appeal to diverse listeners. Or so I thought..

Huh?? Copies? I thought he only 'copied' new wave and punk? From the beginning, when has Prince not been a PART of 'modern' r&b? If there were no Time, you probably would have been hating a long while ago.

Oddly enough, I find DOW and Now two of the better examples.

I think i have to agree with his past efforts but Box of Chocolate with Qtip is fyah and b4 that Undisputed with Chuck D was kinnda like that too I mean it had my friends fron the Bronx lovin' it. so ... maybe it's a matter of who he works with. But yeah, his Tony M and TC Ellis era was a little painful

Amen to what JumpUpOnThe1 said.
I Love the fact that he goes with his interests, inspirations and impulses and makes stuff his own. He mixes it up enough that folks can't pin him down, but, dag, they sho try.
I say keep lovin' hip hop and workin' with it according to the three I's above.
How could he permanently write off ANY art form? You never know what great song can come from any given style.
Count me out.

Agree, but when he does the rap stuff on his own terms, it's awesome. Going waay back to Dead On It, up to the extended performance of come On on Jay Leno.
Prince's rap rocks.

Modern RnB? Not so much...

Sometimes,Prince does some really good hip-hop oriented songs ("Days Of Wild","Now" and even "My Name Is Prince") but sometimes,he sucks at it ("Jughead" and "P Control",for example) lol It just depends on the song.

It's also a matter of taste. "my name is prince" is one of the shittiest songs that prince has ever created, imho. But I like "pussy control", especially the mix on crystal ball.

Nah, I think Prince can incorporate a bit of hiphop here and there. I kinda dig it. batting eyes
Tony M on the other hand... HE needed to leave hiphop alone permanently FROM THE START.

Days Of Wild and Now are among his best 90s output, so if you wanna call that "Hip Hop", then I'd say no, I do not wish so.

But it might become boring if it starts to become "regular", "easy-listening" Hip Hop. Prince sounds way better, more interesting and authentic when his delivery and lyrics are aggressive, à la Now and Days Of Wild.

I think he's gotten better at incorporating touches of it in his music without it sounding like ridiculous posturing & pandering to trends.

He barely has any hip hop on his new album, and when he does, it's Q-Tip, not some young rapper that doesn't blend well with Prince's style. Q-Tip adapts his style for Prince's music rather than Prince adapting his music for hip hop

When was the last time Prince did hiphop? Those songs are from the 1990's.

For the record, I don't even think Tony was a horrible rapper. The problem was, he had nothing to do with Prince's music.

It's like when the guy sang Soul Man at the Musicology concert. It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't Prince anymore.

Is it really hiphop? he experiences a lot... isnt this the reason we all love this music genius? and every music style he uses: the result is always a lot of prince and just some of the original style, isnt it? smile

Q-tip is the man!!!! A Tribe Called Quest all the way. Besides, I think He and Prince are pretty good together! I remember he was on Prince's remix of "The Greatest Romance...".
