I have been a true fan since 1984 when Purple Rain came out. I had never heard of the man before that, but once I saw the movie, that was it, I became a fan for life. I knew instantly that there was something about the skinny MF with the high voice that was so much more interesting than any other artist at that time. I still feel the same way. I love all his music and I know I will always be a fan of his music.

I was 9 when prince hit the pop charts with 1999, LRC, and delirious. i digged the music and thought the videos were cool, but purple rain had me hook, line and sinker. my parents would not buy his albums though and it wasn't until i heard kiss in 86 that i literally got a paper route just to buy prince albums (ok, that, and the nintendo) i joined the columbia music club and got my first 3 prince albums on vinyll, purple rain, atwiad, and parade. i remember spending hours on end studying the album cover art, the lyrics, and the liner notes...while playing super mario brothers!

When I saw this b&w promotional photo of him wearing a leather jacket and huge afro it was love at first sight! *swoon* However, I hated "Soft & Wet." I wasn't feeling "I Wanna Be Your Lover" when it came out either; but it grew on me. He grew on me even more! So, I guess I've been a fan since 1978.

btw, I would love to find that pic of him. I'm gonna have to raid Jet magazine's archives for that one; I've yet to come across it anywhere else.

ok here goes nutthin'...

i've been in2 P & or prince since Emanciaption Era. u'd think i should've been in2 P/prince "way" b4 then. i heard Controversy @ my cousin Randy's house back when it 1st came out & i couldn't catch the hint that P was "The Bomb" then but then i heard "My Name Is Prince" & i thought, hey this is Funky as Hell but still didn't get in2 P til i was Soul Searchin'. i had an "X" come back in2 my Life that drove me Crazy (almost) & she left again & that's when P's Music really hit Home 4 me.

so then it was like i said earlier: Emancipation Era that P became the "ish" 2 me...

I listened to some of the Controversy stuff. Then came the 1999 song and was kind of creeped out. Then I heard AUTOMATIC and was sucked in full speed.

The videos for these songs just fueled the fire. I was a fan for life. Didn't start collecting until 1989-90.

Too Funky!!!

4 years - it began when I heard that kid singing When Doves Cry on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack.
I realized it was a damn good song, so I got the greatest hits disks and it just snowballed from there.
My family still thinks I'm nuts. smile
It took me about 3 years to get all the albums.

I bought the 'Little Red Corvette' / '1999' double A side UK single in 1985 and started to become intrigued. By the time 'Kiss' was released, I bought "Parade" and then bought all the back catalogue in reverse. I was 14 in 1986.
