R U A Prince Fam Or Fan?

I didn't even know what a "fam" was until I joined Prince.org. Now, that I know what it is, I would say I was a "fam" in the 80s. But I didn't listen to P for 15 years after the mid 90s until last year--so, now I can say I'm a "fan" who loves P's music but can still stand back and be critical. So, if you are honest with yourself and the org community, would you say that you are a "fam," "fan," or "hater?" (Forget what other people call you!) lol

Fan.

I may have been a slight fam over his looks when I was younger, but that is so not the case now. lol

I'm a fan. I praise his good stuff, but I am equally vocal when I hear him release shite.

I am a fan of his music and showmanship but think he treats his fanbase apallingly.

In my experience a FAM defends every whacky bullshit decision Prince makes, seem to think he's the messiah and if I say I dislike a lot of tracks on his newer albums, fams tend to say something along the lines of 'your perceptions have changed' eek

Yeah, I've heard that one as well, even though I didn't actually listen to Prince in the 80s (and as such, how can my perception change, when 3121 is as new to me as, say, Lovesexy?)

Anywho, I'm a grown up, and thus: not a fam, but a fan.

I guess im still kind of a fan. I was never a fam though. I will still buy his new music and I occasionally visit the org just to see if anything new is happening.

But I am not as avid a fan as I used to be. Throughout the mid to late 90s I tried my best to enjoy all his output and assured myself that the magic was still there, but into the 00s I stopped hoping for him and I to see eye to eye again. I now just take each release as it comes with no expectations. Most disapoint these days, but thats ok, it doesnt rile me anymore.

In the "fan" days i sort of sheilded myself from some great music that was out there because Prince fulfilled most of my musical needs. Now I find myself much more absorbed in music from other very differing sources, and have a much richer musical backdrop to my life than I did with the blinkers on.

According to the Urban Dictionary...a "fam" can be a "friend, amigo, a mate" or "a fat annoying moron." LOL I would say, in the context of Prince or other celebs, it means someone who worships his/her icon without thought or criticism and may have unreasonable expectations of that person beyond what that person may want or be able to deliver in real life... cool

Fan = Normal human being with an interest in pop music.

Fam = Fanatic. Scary girls who write poetry about how they are The One(TM), and scarier boys who think talking in creepy new-age vagueisms sprinkled with Princebonics makes them appear deep. Both may have converted to JW as early as 1998. eek

Can't believe some people may have converted to JW just because some celebrity did. How weak willed is that?

All depends on your definition of fan and fam.

In my definition anyone who visits this site every day to see if Prince is in the news is probably closer to fam than fan but would never, ever, ever admit to being a fam because it sounds so fucking stupid.

I'm a fan and when it came to Prince back in the early 1980s he was very much an influence on me but I have never been nor will never be a fam. Even back when I thought he could do no wrong, I still had a mind of my own and when I first noticed him fucking up, I didn't have a problem voicing it, even as far back as 1985.

I will never be a fam, because it was around that time when Prince started suing his alleged fans and created the great divide.

I will always be a fan.

Check around places other than the Prince sites. You'll find lots of ex Prince fans beginning with 1985 and not just bandwagon "Purple Rain" fans but fans that bought all the early albums as soon as they were released.

that's because he "Prince" became mainstream ..."pop" as in popular everyone hates mainstream artist until he becomes underground mainstream again ...it's every Young Persons folly...

Once mainstream everyone's a critic because you have a body of work to look back on ....it's always too easy to do ... but re-invent or creating new is for genius .....that's why today 2010 people still buy his records with or without a big record company backing him ..

So called "ex-Prince fans" will still find money or time to download his latest work or buy a concert ticket or buy the 12" CD re-release of his 1983 hit or whatever .... lol

He wasn't underground in his early years. He was all over mainstream R&B radio in the early 1980s with each and every album, was extremely popular, and was well loved. He wasn't some underground club act that never made it above ground until "Little Red Corvette". All the R&B stations had been playing his music for years. He was so popular he was even Rick James's rival. Many of the R&B fans were much more disappointed with him in 1985 than the pop/rock fans who had only been on board for a brief time were. Artists like Sylvester were underground in the early 1980s, not Prince. Prince was right up there competing with and outselling mainstream R&B acts like Cameo, Zapp, Midnight Star, Con Funk Shun, etc. It was only an underground scene to the pop/rock world. If someone loved R&B music in the early 1980s and didn't know who Prince was back then, they were from another planet.

Fan. Definately fan. batting eyes

The only time I could admit to any type of fam-y experience, would be when I first started listening to Prince, I was like, "Must. Buy. All. Albums..." because the music was so damn good. But never obsession...
