Prince will NEVER be "mainstream" until he signs another major record deal with a label like WB.
Sure he can make millions off tours, but he can only do so much to promote his music and get it played on the radio.
And this also kinda goes hand in hand with a topic I just started about 5 minutes ago. He is gonna have to change his "look". Mainstream male performers these days are a little more manly. Look at Doughtry, Nickleback, Keith Urban.
Even usher and Timberlake break out wallet chains, distressed jeans and graphic tees.
This generation doesnt into guys like him too much anymore.
Although...Adam Lambert may be the guy to bring that back into style. Who knows.

This ain't the 1980s when mainstream was good. In order for him to be big in the mainstream again, he would have to become dull both musically and visually. He would have either have to go the shit hop or the adult contemporary route and he would also have to get a "normal" or "down to earth" look.

Yes, if things were still like they were in the 1980s when mainstream artists made bad ass uptempo ass shaking funk and also dressed wild, were snobs, and thought they were better than the average everyday person, yes, I'd love to see Prince big in the mainstream again. But considering that the mainstream these days is the dullest that it has ever been in music history, hell no I don't want to see him in the mainstream again. And if he continues putting current mainstream elements on his albums such as shit hop like he has been lately, I'm going to drop his ass because apparently he's trying to get acceptance from the mainstream. Now, if he can make it in the mainstream doing funky jams with no current mainstream influences whatsoever (not even the smallest or slightest influnces of it), I'd be more than happy to see him in the mainstream again and would hope he could change other artists. But that ain't gonna happen because the mainstream is too dull to like jams so they wouldn't buy them.

vainandy (whom I've always admired, despite his dislike of the Clare Fischer stuff) is absolutely correct. Mainstream today = Lady Gaga, Little Wayne, and whatever else. I don't want to see Prince within a hundred yards of that shit.

What I do want is to see Prince make a clear, legitimate statement about himself now, today, with no concern for current fashion or trends. And no dredging up of funk nostalgia. Give me a 51 year-old man's 'Something in the Water' (whatever that might be), and I will be fully on board.

Although I will always prefer the earlier stuff, I do like a lot of the Clare Fischer stuff, even back then.....but don't tell anybody. lol

he should tour South America, the Jonas Brothers played 2 concerts last year here (Lima, Peru), also KISS, Oasis...
this year Metallica, Beyonce did concerts here, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses (originally it would be plus Jane's Addiction but Sebastian Bach was added to the show instead), Korn, Placebo, Matisyahu, WASP, Franz Ferdinand, are scheduled to play in the upcoming 2 months.
Megadeth played here in 2008, and they are returning here in May. Duran Duran played here 2009. Since 2008, they are all touring South America. Peruvians (teenage girls, their parents) payed like $400 to see the Jonas, TWICE. 50 Cent also played here last year. Toto in 2008-this one i did go to see, front row.

B-52s played here with New York Dolls, last year. I don't recall exactly the years but since 2008 they are all coming... bands i don't like at all.

Oh i just remembered! last year Soul Asylum came including the original NPG drummer MICHAEL BLEND!

here's a clip of "runaway train" from the concert 15Jan2009 here in Lima, Peru, u can see Michael Blend!

Dream Theater is playing here today Thursday 18.

But wouldn't you want him to have a major come back, and being popular in the mainstream again...
This would be nice! He was kinda esoteric in the UK before Purple Rain. Purple Rain catapulted him onto the world stage. His message was therefore there for us all. Even his symbol was on his motorbike (it did appear earlier, I think, on 1999).
My question: wouldn't you want it to be different: Prince to be a "hit" again, outside the internet, to reach out to the mainstream, more than just reach the "cult" followers (us) here on the internet.
I'm not sure if his situation could be classed as cult. Maybe it could. I'd love Prince to be a hit again to the whole world!
And aren't you a bit jealous on other artist's success in the mainstream ?
No. There's a place for all types and styles of music, and if some become successful, good luck to them. What goes wrong was detailed by Prince on Jughead, thus: "You laugh at my brother Little Richard when he said, 'You ain't give me nuthin'. Hell, that ain't no joke. His songs are still sung, that guy could die broke".
what would it take in your opinion for Prince to have a come back?
In my very, very, very humble opinion, I believe it's up to Prince himself. I believe he could do it. It may be a question of timing, or it may be a question of getting the right words in the right context to send his message to all. I am just speculating. One interesting, almost political thing he did do in the UK was send his CD out free with the Sunday Mail around 3 years ago. It really put the frighteners up those in the music business who were making too much money out of artists.

I've always found that one of the cool things about Prince is that he's right smack bang in the middle between "commercial" and "underground". People who love commercial stuff find him a little too weird, while those who love underground stuff are put off by his commercial eccentricities...

Occasionally he'll do something to get the public's attention to varied success, and sometimes he'll try something a little different and experiment, again, to varied success. But that's all part and parcel of who he is. I'm pretty content with the direction his career is pointing at the moment. Sure, it would be cool if a few more people knew him and understood his music like we do, but similarly, not everyone shares the same desire for the kind of music he makes.

I 2nd that, the whole world and should include South America, because lots of times we hear about so called World Tours and they're only USA, 2 or 3 European countries and Japan!
Prince has only done 3 concerts in South America in his whole life, 2 in Brazil 1991, and 1 Argentina 1991.
They are all touring South America since 2009 because the world (it's really just the USA, right? why do they call it world crisis, USA is the World?) economic crisis hasn't affected South America, we're doing excellent economically.

I dont think that Prince will be back in the game of charts - It would mean that he would agree that record companies would put him in the charts -and I dont think that he want to be part of that game, and I agree with him... Live he will make it thou... and put out relevant albums - at least that is my HOPE...
