Don't you wish Prince would show the whole world...

...just how great he is.... question

- to be a "secret cult leader" for his underground fan base is cool. And selling 300,000 albums is actually OK for an older artist at 51... wink lol

But wouldn't you want him to have a major come back, and being popular in the mainstream again...

edit: I guess the mainstream media gave up Prince long time ago, cuz he and his music is just not that interesting no more. His music is not played on TV or radio no more, usually only the big old classics like Kiss or Raspberry Beret.

My question: wouldn't you want it to be different: Prince to be a "hit" again, outside the internet, to reach out to the mainstream, more than just reach the "cult" followers (us) here on the internet.

And aren't you a bit jealous on other artist's success in the mainstream ?

IF you can answer "YES" to this,

what would it take in your opinion for Prince to have a come back?

He has, since 2004 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and Musicology tour.

If you're asking for relevancy on mainstream pop radio..that's different

^ Musicology was kind of a come back I agree, but I think it happened mostly in the US (the US tour),

the past few years Prince has been invissible in Europe, His latest album wasn't even released over here.

I just wish Prince would be famous again, on the radio, in the media... not only being the secret "cult leader" that he is now..

21 Nights in London.

You want Prince to be famous again on the radio and the media..aka relevant. Aint gonna happen. The fame that he has already regained (which is quite grand as it is) is as far as it goes and is all that's going to be no matter what he releases. Its the same for Clapton, Stones, etc etc

Prince IS great and the whole world already knows it. Being popular in mainstream doesn't make one great. Greatness is something few people strive for these days, unfortunately. Prince is one of the last remaining musician/songwriter/performers with God given natural talent. Often imitated but never duplicated. Bravo!!!!

You think Prince is acting like a "cult artist"? You should have been around for the mid to late 90's. Since 2004 we've been in mainstream heaven.

Oh, one more thing. Superbowl. Astonomical audience. Rave reviews. Enough said.

he already has

the commercial music industry is a sinking ship

do you really want him to be on that sinking ship when it goes down?

mainstream media is the lowest rung on the ladder of 'greatness'

'greatness' is when he left it all behind and preached Free Music

'greatness' is saying hello to a world of real values and leaving false values behind

The whole industry has changed - record companies are not investing in talent like they did in the 80's and 90's. It's going to be really hard to have another U2, Madonna, MJ, Bruce, and certainly Prince. The model is different.

I remember going to record stores 15-20 years ago and there was activity and excitement when new CD's were coming out - go to a record store now and they are struggling to survive.

I'm not saying it's better or worse, just different. I think Prince is doing great. I just wish he had more of the fight he had in him when he was trying to establish himself - but, we all get older.

I think Prince could really benefit from pulling an 'Eric Clapton Unplugged' sorta thing.

Just drop the costumes and mythology, pull on a pair of jeans, write some honest songs about who he is today, and share them with everyone in an honest, bare-bones sort of way. He hinted at songs like this with 'Don't Talk 2 Strangers' and 'She Loves Me 4 Me', and I really wish he'd explore that further.

Kinda like the album 'The Truth', only... more truthful.

Personally, I would love to see a documentary done on Prince, the musician, showing Prince working in the studio, and playing a bunch of different instruments. I think the world would have a true appreciation of the genius of prince seeing him truly in his element without "the show", you know, all the lights, drama, etc. The documentary should be shown in prime-time with lots of hype leading up to the airing. Of course, this should all be a precusor to a new album lol being released, centering around Prince, the musician. The album could be a funk / blues heavy album. Just my opinion...OR...dream!

He could stay interested in a project for at least a year. I mean Lotusflower had enough material to promote for a good minute.

Other than that, he could do something like Sergio Mendes/ Timeless,
like rap remixes of his best hits, with some rappers, so at least the youth would be interested in his past catalogue

Keep the clothes-thats him being him. We don't want a pretender-it would seem false if he were to wear levis. All he has to do is make a great CD.

Why not? You asked how he could show the whole world how good he is. It's not like his current albums are being noticed by the mainstream. And the only way for that to happen is if he signed to a major label, which he's against

eyewishuheavan...you are SPOT on with this observation. If Prince did this it would be a huge success!!!! There was a certain vulnerability and honest raw emotion that existed in his earlier music that I just don't hear anymore. It's almost as if the real Prince is hiding behind behind a characture of the Prince persona he has created. It's just not working in my opinion.

Prince does not need to "come back" he's been there and done that his entire career. Now he's just coasting and whenever he does a live show, there is always a high turn out and the albums he puts out either go Gold or come close. I'm fine with that.

Exactly - what the hell is the op talking about? He even got Grammy nominations from his last four albums: 3121, Musicology, Planet Earth, and Lotusflow3r. Does it get more mainstream than that?

^ maybe my 1st post wasn't exact then? (I have just made an edit to post #1)

If it wasn't for the org, and housequake.com before I would not know anything about Prince and his single / album releases.

the media outside the internet are not playing his music videos, you are lucky to hear him on the radio, but usually it' s the old classic like Kiss and Raspberry Beret which gets played.

Last night on the news: the late MJ will release 10 new albums in 7 years, since his death every media has been talking about MJ and his music. I guess I'm a little jealous, cuz Prince never gets that mention anymore.

The world / the mainstream media does not care about Prince and his music,

I guess the mainstream gave up Prince long time ago, cuz he and his music is just not that interesting no more.

My question: wouldn't you want it to be different: Prince to be a "hit" again, outside the internet, to reach out to the mainstream, more than just reach the "cult" followers, which is us, the "fanatics".

And aren't you a bit jealous on other artist's success in the mainstream ?
