For "new" Prince fans....2000 to present

What album or song won you over? Was it something recent or some old school material that made you become a fan?
Since then, what is your collection?
What about the man himself do you like?

Saw Prince for the first time at the 02, fell in love with the song "The Beautiful Ones" I only went to concert because of all the press, and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I was hooked from the first show and went back to see 6 more concerts and 6 aftershows. I started to collect all his CDs, the one that I got addicted to was "Old friends for sale" I now have all is albums cd singles VHS DVD's concert programmes books and mega load of bootlegs. As an artist he is amazing very very talented. I went to both concerts in Montreux cost me a fortune with flights and tix, but i'm not complaining it was worth every penny.

I can't say what i likeabout the man, I only know what i have read about him, he seems very complicated. But who cares I just love ALL his music From For You to Lotusflower.

Do not forget to find out about the new Bootleg FBG029 - Box Of Chocolates.
It was suppressed very recently here.

I knew some of his songs and really liked them, but my first albums were Planet Earth and Musicology. Now I have all of his albums, some vinyls and singles.

And not sure why. Last I checked, it wasn't illegal to discuss bootlegs.

I have found that rules change, or are "modified" according to who it is and the mood at the time.
Ive had topics of mine removed or locked for absolutely no reason. I guess cause it wasnt boring enough to be a topic.

I was informed the thread was removed due to there being more than a discussion going on. Go figure.

It must be the US corprocracy. The industrial complex that tries to dominate everything.
It even gets to peoples' heads.
They don't even THINK about the freedom that they should live in.

(and don't get me started about the seemingly greater issues in current times that are not dealt with as they should...)

As I left Prince music in 1996, not really having everything and only came back last year, catching up with past cds, I think I can comment.

Not only was it old cds like OFFS & the Truth that I liked, but recent material. The ONA, Quite a lot of Musicology and 3121, TRC and of course Lotusflower. Only Planet earth didn't really bowl me over.

The music then, (last year was all new to me, but there was depth, artistry, progression, evolution, style & diversity, something Prince always managed to produce back then in the 80s and early 90s. I'm probably more fond of his music now, than I ever was.

Began my road to being a prince fan around Halloween 2008. I need great music to clean my house to. Target had "the Best of" album for sale 9.98.
I wondered "what has this man that has been up to lately"
next I checked the Prince area in the music section, there was one copy of Planet Earth. I liked it and to me it was so different then his old stuff. Now I have 21 releases.
Still missing, Dirty Mind, Prince, NEWS, Chaos and Disorder, the Vault, Crystal Ball, the Black Album and Symbol too, oops and Graffiti Bridge, I have the movie but not the album. It's amazing that I can have so much, most purchased as used at my local FYE. I am fascinated at how varied his sound is. I can play him all day and never, ever get sick of him because the combination of the # of releases combined with the variety of style he uses.
There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

I might restart a thread, and let's just keep it on track w/ the rules of not asking where to get it. We all know the usual places, so why even bring it up?

After my parents bought me Musicology very randomly, my teacher (who became a mentor to me) recommended Dirty Mind and ATWIAD. Those two sealed the deal for me and before I knew it I was buying I knew Prince album every week. cool

Well, I got that new release.
But new fans should not start that way.

I still remember when my Nana blasted "When Doves Cry" in her car on repeat. The image of her dancing and singing the wrong lyrics will remain in my head forever. We didn't know who sang it or the name of the song, but it was one of the best experiences I have had.

But what really got me into him was watching Purple Rain, for the second time...

It was his Super Bowl performance that really opened my eyes to his genious at the age of 11.
Purple Rain and that guitar solo totally did it for me, then Let's Go Crazy and Kiss followed

it went down hill from there lol
I started from his oldies and worked into the new stuff, Lotus Flower just came out when I started really hitting my stride with his work- & I completely adore that album

I can say I love his new stuff & totally appreciate it, but not to the extent of the magicality and rawness of how it was back in the day

What do I like about him as a person? His dedication and renewal to God. cool

Well, my mom grew up in the 80s and I've always heard his songs on the radio once in while. I like Michael Jackson & he was in the same era of Prince. I started listening to Prince's music and completely fell in love with it. I think "Raspberry Beret" was the song that was the first song I heard from him. smile

I am so glad to hear that there are younger fans! My son is 21 and I won him over to Prince when I started listening to P's music after not doing so for 15 years. One of my son's fav songs now is "Let's Go Crazy" on his new Ipod. But, I gotta say, after not hearing P's songs since the 90s, his music sound fresh to me, and I like many of his new songs as well as the old! He still has more to give us that is good! biggrin
